There are officially 94 days until the toe meets the ball at AT&T Stadium where the Dallas Cowboys will host the New York Giants on NBC’s Sunday Night Football.

We have a lot of football on the horizon, but with OTAs wrapping yesterday we need Cowboys stuff NOW. Well don’t worry yourself too much; I can solve any problem that you have. (Unless you need someone to squeeze you fresh orange juice, I don’t have time for that). The Cowboy content continues here at Inside The Star always, and today we continue our Cowboy countdown with the Greatest 94 in Dallas Cowboys History.

The following players have all worn 94 for the Dallas Cowboys:

  • Josh Brent, DT
  • Chris Cooper, DE
  • Charles Haley, DE
  • Michael Myers, DE (not that one, relax)
  • Randy Shannon, LB
  • DeMarcus Ware, LB
  • Randy Watts, DE

94 is a pretty historic number in Dallas Cowboys History. One of the men to wear it, Charles Haley, will head to Canton, OH this August and join the most elite fraternity (Shannon Sharpe’s words) in professional football…The Pro Football Hall of Fame. Charles is the only human in the history of the world (THE ENTIRE WORLD) to earn five Super Bowl rings as a player.

In the 2005 NFL Draft the Dallas Cowboys held the 11th overall pick. Bill Parcells wanted Shawn Merriman, and he made that well known; however, Jerry Jones had his eye on a certain linebacker from Troy (the university not the badass movie with Brad Pitt). The Cowboys took DeMarcus Ware and the 94 torch was passed forevermore.

DeMarcus Ware put together what might very well be a career that someday joins Charles Haley in the hallowed halls of Canton. In nine years, Ware amassed 442 tackles, 117 sacks, and 32 forced fumbles. These numbers are stupid incredible. To put in perspective just how dominant Ware was, specifically against his fellow 94s (which keep in mind do include Pro Football Hall of Famer Haley), check this out:

  • He has almost two times as many tackles…as all of the other 94s combined
  • He has almost three times as many forced fumbles…as all of the other 94s combined
  • He has almost FOUR TIMES as many sacks…as all of the other 94s combined

Beyond the scope of 94 Ware is one of the more decorated and more perennial defensive players in Dallas Cowboys and NFL History. He was voted to eight Pro Bowls, seven of which were consecutive from 2006-2012, and was voted to the All-Pro team four times. As someone who has a deep appreciation for Dallas Cowboys and Pro Football History, I don’t say this lightly, but DeMarcus could very well be the greatest defensive player to ever play for America’s Team. He is undeniably, unequivocally, and indisputably the Greatest 94 in Dallas Cowboys History.

Check back tomorrow to find out who the Greatest 93 in Dallas Cowboys History is!

  1. I definitely would NOT call this an easy selection. Ware has the stats, but Haley IS the legend. But I didn’t realize Ware had the stats by such a large margin. Nice write up, RJ.

    • Thanks, Bryson. Very fun and educational to write. Haley is the man, but Ware’s resume is loaded. Moreso than people might think. Pretty awesome that both are Cowboys legends.

      • I had never even bothered to look at the stats between the two; I just assumed Haley had more. Haley is great, but Ware has the numbers on his side. Thanks for enlightening me.
