Cornerback Daryl Worley Signing with the Dallas Cowboys

The player acquisition game never rests. Even after the Dallas Cowboys just had arguably their best draft since 2016, they dove right back into the free-agent pool, and it looks as though they’ve added another cornerback to an already deep group heading into 2020.

As the Dallas Cowboys continue to look for ways to improve their secondary, it appears they’ve signed former Carolina Panthers and Oakland (now Las Vegas) Raiders Cornerback Daryl Worley. At least that’s what Daryl Worley is telling us.

In his four-year career, he’s recorded five interceptions, two sacks, and 34 pass deflections. In 2019, Worley allowed a passer rating of 99.1, which ranked 51st in the NFL among cornerbacks who played at least 326 snaps per Pro Football Focus. He was 22nd in the league in coverage snaps per reception at 12.5 snaps per reception. That was tied with Baltimore Ravens Cornerback Brandon Carr and better than Tennessee’s Adoree Jackson, New Orleans’ Janoris Jenkins, and Buffalo’s Tre’Davious White.

Per Marcus Mosher, who covers the Dallas Cowboys for the Locked on Cowboys Podcast and the Las Vegas Raiders for the Raiders Wire on USA Today, Daryl Worley is a press-man cornerback. This seems to fall in line with what the Dallas Cowboys did over the weekend in the NFL Draft by selecting Alabama’s Trevon Diggs and Tulsa’s Reggie Robinson II.

Worley, 25, was the 77th overall pick of the 2016 NFL Draft by the Carolina Panthers and played two years before being traded to the Philadelphia Eagles for Wide Receiver Torrey Smith. He never played a snap for the Eagles. He most recently played for the Oakland Raiders, where he started 15 games in 2019 and nine games in 2018 after serving a four-game suspension for violating the league’s personal conduct policy.

In April of 2018, Worley was arrested for driving under the influence and weapons and disorderly conduct charges and was released not long after. Worley served a four-game suspension for that arrest.

Now the Dallas Cowboys boast a cornerback group of:

  • Chidobe Awuzie
  • Jourdan Lewis
  • Anthony Brown
  • Maurice Canady
  • C.J. Goodwin
  • Trevon Diggs
  • Reggie Robinson II
  • Daryl Worley

Over the weekend, Dallas Cowboys Head Coach Mike McCarthy mentioned that the Cowboys had a couple of cornerbacks who could move to safety. With eight cornerbacks who could make the Cowboys 55-man roster out of training camp, the Dallas Cowboys have so much depth that someone might need to move to make room for the six or seven corners they take into the regular season.

Daryl Worley is a solid veteran presence that will push the guys on the depth chart and the rookies for snaps. He may just force one established veteran to find a new position. The Cowboys continue to invest in cornerbacks that fit a type. And in less than a week, they’ve spent considerable resources on that type. Big, strong, press capable cornerbacks that can create turnovers.
