BREAKING: Cowboys Place Franchise Tag on TE Dalton Schultz

As rumored in recent days, the Dallas Cowboys are using their 2022 franchise tag on Tight End Dalton Schultz. If he plays on the tag, Schultz will make $10.9 million next season.

Reports over the last 48 hours have had Dallas considering the tag for Schultz and supposedly not planning to use it on Defensive End Randy Gregory. With today’s news, it appears Gregory will now be an unrestricted free agent as of March 16th.

Dallas is supposedly trying to reach long-term agreements with both Schultz and Gregory. In both cases, multi-year contracts will allow the Cowboys to keep these key player on the roster and also reduce their cap hits in 2022 from what the franchise tag would have demanded.

With Blake Jarwin’s prospects for playing at all in 2022 now dubious, Dalton had a lot of leverage this offseason. One of the NFL’s most-productive tight ends next year, the former 4th-Round pick is now on the way to being one of the best compensated as well.

Hopefully Dalton Schultz and the Cowboys can agree on a mutually beneficial contract as the offseason continues.
