According to NFL Insiders Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo, the Dallas Cowboys are interested in signing WR Odell Beckham Jr. and hope to strike a deal by early December. The Cowboys and several other teams interested in the wideout expect him to be fully healthy from his ACL injury around that time, but they also hoped they could have signed him mid-November.
Their report is the second time the Cowboys and the former Los Angeles Rams wide receiver have been mentioned together in the same sentence this season, as Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said on 105.3 The Fan that he admires Beckham Jr. “a lot” last week.
But if the Cowboys were to land a deal with Beckham Jr., expect a multi-year contract, as Rapoport and Garafolo added that the veteran wideout wants to end his career somewhere after searching for a home with a team for multiple years.
Spotrac has his market value listed at 13.1 million per year.
The addition of Beckham Jr. would take the Cowboys’ offense to another level, as it would give them another elite wideout. While people may point to Beckham Jr.’s age and have concerns over his injury, he showed last season that he can still be a contributor.
(He was en route to being the Super Bowl MVP if he didn’t get hurt. So, he’s good.)
Plus, to those on the boat that the Cowboys don’t need another wideout, well, the team feels differently. In addition to the Beckham Jr. news, NFL Network Insider Tom Pelissero reported the team made an offer for Denver Broncos WR Jerry Jeudy, but the two sides couldn’t agree on a price.
Add the Jeudy, Beckham Jr., and the Brandin Cooks news (the Cowboys tried trading for him as well) — that is three wideouts that the team has attempted to add to their roster.
So yes, the Boys do need to add a wideout.
Despite all of the WR news, as we all know, Jones and the Cowboys have been reluctant to make splashy moves. We all saw the typical Jerry quote before the trade deadline that “they were eyeing potential moves”– but of course, nothing.
Also, the last time the team made a big free-agent signing was arguably in 2006, when they signed wideout Terrell Owens. Or if you count running back Darren McFadden in 2015 as your guy — then it’s been about seven years since a notable name has come to Jerry World.
So my advice to fans: Don’t get your hopes too high.
Every year we see notable names linked to the Cowboys, but it feels like they use America’s Team as leverage to land more money, or the front office doesn’t want to spend big dollars. You just saw it in the offseason with Dallas native Von Miller, who many speculated was coming home, but he wound up becoming a Buffalo Bill.
But you may not hear any other developments for Beckham Jr. and the Cowboys for a few weeks, as the front office will likely tell the media that they are focused on the current team and like their guys.
So, buckle up, and enjoy a stress-free Sunday, as the Cowboys won’t give you any headaches this week. Because next week, they got the good ole’ Packers — which should be a fun game.
