Jersey numbers announced for new Cowboys players

The Dallas Cowboys have assigned jersey numbers to four of their newest acquisitions, some of which we have seen recently on former players.

Although Jerry Jones recently told the world they haven’t ruled out a possible Ezekiel Elliott return, he would need a new number if we were to see him back.

Stephon Gilmore

Cornerback Stephon Gilmore will take No. 21 to the other side of the ball. A number Zeke held for seven seasons as the starting running back.

We have seen that the Jones family doesn’t like to retire jersey numbers. No. 21 was also worn by one the greatest ever to play this game, Deion Sanders, and he was holding down the defense in the mid-to-late 90s.

Hopefully, Gilmore can give the Cowboys a solid year or two and bring one of those Super Bowl titles back to Dallas. This defense might be legendary.

Brandin Cooks

As for the offensive side of the ball, Brandin Cooks will take No. 3. The jersey worn by cornerback Anthony Brown, a free agent this year.

Thus, if re-signed, another player must find a new number. Brown wore No. 30 before making the switch last season.

I was hoping Gilmore would take the single-digit number instead of Cooks, but either way, the walking 1000-yard receiver will look good catching passes in Dallas.

Ronald Jones

Running back Ronald Jones, who the Cowboys signed last week, will wear No. 32. The last time we saw a Cowboy wear this number was from cornerback Orlando Scandrick.

Walk Garrison also wore that number when carrying the rock for Dallas from the 1960s to the early 70s.

A signing maybe folks didn’t see or have yet to hear about is offensive lineman Chuma Edoga. He was only signed for depth, and he will wear No. 71. He only appeared in two games for the Falcons last season.

Expect much of No. 71 on the sideline in 2023 for Dallas.

That is the number Jason Peters won last season, but the 41-year-old is currently a free agent, and I highly doubt that if he returns for his 18th season, it will be with the Cowboys.

I know this isn’t the most eliciting news, but it is an solid update so we know which numbers to look out for in 2023.

The NFL agreed on Tuesday to now allow teams to wear No. 0. Those close to the team say Jayron Kearse has already jumped on the train by asking the team to make the switch.

The draft is quickly approaching along with offseason workouts, more numbers for rookies and free agents are sure to follow.
