The second day of the 2023 NFL Draft was nearly as entertaining as the first day was. It started early in the morning in the form of a flow of salt from part of the Cowboys’ fanbase.
They were still out of sorts over the Mazi Smith pick after Buffalo jumped ahead in the draft and nabbed Dalton Kincaid. My Twitter feed was… interesting. Then the second round kicked in and our salty friends got some good news.
Dallas finally got their tight end, Luke Schoonmaker from Michigan. Personally I would have preferred South Dakota State’s Tucker Kraft, but I don’t run the Cowboys, do I? At least my Twitter feed calmed down.
I’ll admit I didn’t see Dallas going after DeMarvion Overshown, a senior linebacker from Texas. But this is a third round pick I can get behind. Can you picture Micah Parsons times two terrorizing NFL quarterbacks? I can. I like the view.
There was plenty to like about the second and third rounds on Friday. Here’s some of my favorite highlights:
Drew Pearson Is A Master Troll
Can anyone rile up a crowd like Drew Pearson? I think not. The man taught master classes on the fields of the NFL in the last century. He’s teaching master classes in trolling an NFL Draft crowd in this century.
A couple of other guest announcers tried their hand at it, but they all paled in comparison to 88. And he did it twice last night. Kudos!
Trading The Night Away
A total of 16 trades were pulled during Friday’s two rounds. It got so crazy during the second round I abandoned live tweeting the draft after the second round ended. I had four posts to write and these trades weren’t giving me any time to write them.
I suppose the biggest trade of the night came prior to the second pick of the night. The Titans moved up to end Will Levis nightmare fall from grace early. I’m still not sure why he slipped so far, but the Titans got themselves a good quarterback. It seems the Malik Willis era in Tennessee has ended before it even got started.
Like Father , Like Son
Yeah, I hate the Steelers as much as the next Cowboys’ fan. But it was pretty cool that Pittsburgh managed to draft the son of one of its former stars. Joey Porter Jr. isn’t a linebacker like his dad was, but he’ll fit right in up there in the Steel City.
Goff Can’t Catch A Break
Jared Goff beat out Carson Wentz to be the No. 1 pick in the 2016 Draft. The Los Angeles Rams rewarded him by trading him away for Matt Stafford to win a Super Bowl. Goff landed in Detroit, the NFL’s version or Purgatory.
He manages to get the team on the cusp of the playoffs and it looks like he’s resurrected his career just in the nick of time. Then Detroit goes and drafts his replacement. Hendon Hooker might just be a third round pick but if Goff falters…
Take That Aaron
Remember the recent drafts when Aaron Rodgers all but begged the Packers to draft him some help? Then he goes off to the Jets and the very next draft Green Bay does him dirty.
The Packers selected tight end Luke Musgrave and wide receiver Jayden Reed in the second round. Then took tight end Tucker Kraft in the third round.
Adding insult to injury, the Packers sent out LeRoy Butler to rub a lot of salt into the wound, telling new quarterback Jordan Love he was getting some help. Ouch.
