The Dallas Cowboys put the finishing touches on an 0-4 preseason this evening, falling to the Houston Texans 14-6.
To be quite honest there isn’t much to say about tonight’s performance. The Cowboys offense was once again stagnant, as they finish off their final two preseason games with just 9 combined points.
These backup and third string offensive linemen were as bad as you’d expect, and starting quarterback (for the night) Cooper Rush continued to play really poorly. Rush was intercepted early in the first quarter, giving the Texans a short field to work with to take the 7-3 lead.
On the bright side the Cowboys defense looked impressive once again, though no expected starters saw any time.
The best news of the night, however, is that the preseason is finally over. It’s now time to focus on the Carolina Panthers and the 2018 regular season. Finally.
Other Notes
- For the second straight week Mike White outplayed Cooper Rush. I’m not sure that White will unseat Rush as the backup quarterback behind Dak Prescott, but he’s certainly earned some consideration. White has looked increasingly sure of himself each week during the preseason, and has clearly not been given the best supporting cast around him. With that being said, the Cowboys should still look at which quarterbacks become available on Saturday, because neither of these guys are ready for real game action.
- There’s simply no way Chaz Green can make this team. He’s been downright awful all preseason.
- The Cowboys defensive line is deep. Fourth round pick Dorance Armstrong was all over the field tonight, providing consistent pass rush and disrupting the Texans passing attack every snap. Daniel Ross also brought a strong rush from the interior.
- Safety Jeron Johnson didn’t have a bad night, and for these “bubble” safeties, that’s saying a lot. Johnson ended up tallying double digit tackles tonight.
- The “running back three” battle appears increasingly irrelevant. Neither Darius Jackson nor Bo Scarbrough went out and won the job tonight. Honestly, Jordan Chunn looked better than both of those guys did. Running back could be a spot where the Cowboys can save a roster spot if needed.
- Linebacker Justin March-Lillard had another good night, and has earned his spot as LB6 on this roster.
- Kicker Brett Maher was 2/2 on field goal attempts, including a 57 yarder.
- Former Cowboys quarterback Brandon Weeden is now the backup in Houston. Because of course he is.
- Oh, have I mentioned the preseason is over and it’s time for meaningful football. We made it, guys.
