It's been quite the week of Cowboys rumors, huh?
Beginning with Tom Brady and ending with draft day trade up scenarios, the world loves a good crazy Jerry Jones story. A few days ago, Pro Football Network's Tony Pauline hinted at a big Cowboys rumor in his mailbag post, saying that sources close to the team believe owner Jerry Jones wants to make a big splash on draft day.
I'm skeptical.
“I can tell you this – a source close to the team told me, “Jerry wants to make a big splash in the draft.” That leads me to believe Jones could look to trade up from the 17th overall pick.”
Despite popular opinion, Jerry Jones hasn't been a draft day splash guy for quite some time. In fact, the Dallas Cowboys have been more of a boring draft day team most years. Whether it's first round offensive linemen or day three trades for unheralded safeties, Jones and the Cowboys have been the antithesis of the “big splash” team on draft day.
Now this could change, of course. Jones was visibly upset with the team's 2019 performance week in and week out, so much so that he let go of head coach Jason Garrett and overhauled the entire coaching staff. He could be so disappointed in the current state of the franchise that he feels they need a splash, something to shake up their 2020 fortunes.
But the Cowboys just traded their 2019 first round pick for Amari Cooper, and didn't see much initial success from that particular draft class last season. Something tells me Dallas wants to stay put and draft as many players as possible, rather than trading any of their lottery picks.
One trade I could see, though? For Jets safety Jamal Adams.
This, of course, would be quite the splash – one that would require that first round draft pick.
