S Participant: Josh Jones[5/5] Josh Jones, NC State (6’2″, 215)

When you draw up the perfect height/weight/speed NFL safety, you come away with a player a lot like Josh Jones. Jones is still flying somewhat under the radar as of now, but that will all change after the show he will put on at the NFL combine. I personally think he could be the perfect safety to pair with Byron Jones.

Jones has the speed and coverage ability to be a free safety in the NFL, but he is also a physical tackler that can play around the line of scrimmage as a box safety. That versatility is hard to come by and that is why I think he will shoot up draft boards after this weekend at the NFL combine.

The only real negative about Josh Jones is that he played at NC State and didn’t play against a lot of elite competition. But, we have seen small school players become a big-time success in the NFL before. He is also a little bit overaggressive, which sometimes put him in a bad situation. He seems to want to deliver a big hit every time he makes a tackle, so whoever drafts him will have to put in some extra work to get him to break that bad habit.

Josh Jones will likely hear his name called on Day Three during the 2017 NFL Draft. It’s unlikely he will still be on the board when the Dallas Cowboys are on the clock in the sixth round, so they might have to use their fourth round draft pick if they want to secure services. I would personally be on board with that selection.

  1. “”I expect him (Obi) to perform really well in all of the different combine events, especially the broad jump and vertical jump.”
Man, you were prescient! He was the Combine’s best in both.
