The Cowboys are working towards tomorrow’s cut deadline by dealing with injured players first. As announced a few hours ago:

Josh Thomas, cornerback, was a fifth-round pick of the Cowboys in 2011. He did not make the team as a rookie and floated around the league for several seasons. He returned to Dallas late last year for depth and was re-signed to compete as an experienced veteran among young prospects.

One of those young guys was rookie Jeremiah McKinnon, who joined the team as a free agent immediately after the draft. He played for Florida International in college. Neither he or Thomas was likely to make this year’s team.

James Morris, a linebacker out of Iowa, was also unlikely to find a roster spot. He’d received a good bit of playing time in preseason and was visible on special teams, but the Cowboys are currently loaded with a mix of veterans and drafted prospects. He spent last year bouncing between the Giants’ roster and practice squad.

These moves, in addition to the waiving of Shaneil Jenkins, have brought the total number of players down to 80. Five more moves will be needed between now and 4:00 PM EST tomorrow.
