For the first time in a while, the best team in the NFC made an adjustment to their 53-man roster. The Dallas Cowboys have waived running back Rod Smith.

Rod Smith is technically listed as a running back, but he’s one of the two fullbacks that the Cowboys kept when they assembled their roster right before the season began (the other being Keith Smith). Rod, the brother of Cowboys 2nd Round Pick Jaylon Smith, has contributed on special teams but was seemingly the most expendable player.
The Cowboys need that wiggle room because they’re hurting in the secondary. Morris Claiborne (groin) and Barry Church (arm) are both expected to miss 4-6 weeks with different injuries, so it’s very likely that this roster move was made to make room for a DB. The Cowboys did sign cornerback Leon McFadden to their practice squad early last week and Jason Garrett has said that they are impressed by him. He’s likely the player they’re making room for.
