The long anticipated decision to move on from is now official. Jay Glazer of Fox Sports is reporting that the have informed Jason Garrett that “he is out as head coach.”

This comes as no surprise as Jerry and Stephen Jones were publicly frustrated with the way the season ended for the Dallas Cowboys after expectations were sky high to start the season.

In the preseason, the Cowboys were seen by many as the favorite to win the and the team had Super Bowl aspirations. After starting out 3-0, however, the wheels fell off and the Dallas Cowboys went 5-8 over the rest of the season dropping games to teams that will be picking in the top 10 of the .

This officially signifies the end of an era that had its moments of competitiveness, but ended as it started; 8-8 and out of the playoffs.

Throughout his tenure, the Cowboys were never able to make it past the divisional round of the playoffs despite a first round bye in 2016 and victories in the 2014 and 2018 wild card rounds.

As Jason Garrett's contract was set to expire, per reports January 14th at the latest, the Cowboys didn't really need to fire Garrett. This is simply, the Cowboys won't be offering Garrett a new contract.

The Dallas Cowboys front office had already begun the search to replace Garrett, holding interviews with former Green Bay Packers Head Coach and Former Cincinnati Bengals Head Coach Marvin Lewis in recent days. While the official decision comes a week after the regular season concluded, this was the outcome that was always expected.

The Cowboys will now move forward with their coaching search. Names like Lincoln Riley, Urban Meyer, Matt Rhule, and several coaches still in the playoffs will take their turn to interview for the Dallas Cowboys.

With this move, the Cowboys can now begin the 2020 offseason in earnest. Finding Jason Garrett's successor is the first item on the agenda.
