Could Andre Smith Come to Dallas?

We all know Jerry Jones likes to take risks, but will he draft Andre Smith? The award winning college Tackle from Alabama University. This is the guy who at one point was to be the # 1 pick in the draft by Detroit, and now he may not even be drafted.

Here’s a snippet from TFYDraft.com:

The situation has gone from bad to worse for Andre Smith. His bench press results were a pitiful 19-reps. His position work was also very mediocre. One scout has told us is it the ‘worst workout he ever saw’ and a number of scouts are cranky that they made the long trip to Alabama to watch the pitiful workout. A second scout has told us ‘Smith lost millions of dollars’.

And another writer from Pro Football Today wrote:

Smith ‘bombed.’ The way things are going; teams will be drafting equipment managers before they draft Andre Smith. Most decent stadium hot dog vendors are more highly sought-after. Dan Leone will be drafted before Andre Smith.

With all of this talk about how bad he did at his Pro-Day, again my question is will Jerry draft Andre? If he is there on the second day, will Jerry Jones take a risk on this guy because of the production he had in college, and look past the poor showing at his Pro-Day?

I think that if Smith is available in the mid to later rounds, the Cowboys will take him simply because he has good skills on the field. He would be a great backup for any team in the league, and that will keep him from being undrafted, but his actions at the combine and pro-day, as well as his declining physical shape the last few months will keep him from being drafted on day one.

As an Alabama fan I can’t help but shake my head at this kid. I do think that teams will still look closely at him, and I think he would be a good pick up. A way to minimize the risk with him is to have plenty of incentives in his contract, not just with playing but with work ethic, and see what happens from there.

That’s the good thing about it … you can put incentives in his contract, and you can sign him to just a one year deal. No long term commitment or hassle should he flop again.
