Football is back!

This evening the thing that we have all missed most will come racing back into our arms with a force. The New England Patriots and Pittsburgh Steelers will square off as the 2015 NFL season officially gets underway.

The Dallas Cowboys will have to wait 3 more days as their matchup with the New York Giants won’t happen until Sunday evening. I gave some consideration to abandoning sleep until then out of excitement, but I’m out of Monsters so it’s not really my fault.

One way that I can channel my excitement is through our Countdown To Kickoff series. Today we’re coming at you with the Greatest 3 in Dallas Cowboys History. Let’s get it.

The Following Players Have All Worn 3 For The Dallas Cowboys:

  • Billy Cundiff, K
  • Richie Cunningham, K
  • Jon Kitna, QB
  • Jim Miller, P
  • Eddie Murray, K
  • Steve Walsh, QB
  • Brandon Weeden*, QB

*Active player on the Dallas Cowboys roster

During the NFL season Sundays and Mondays are definitely happy days. Tuesdays and Wednesdays are sort of happy days. Thursdays and Fridays are always happy days! When the weekend comes our cycles hum, ready to race to football!

THESE DAYS ARE OOOOOOOUUUUUURRRRRRSSSSSSSS!

Richie Cunningham

Cowboys Blog - Cowboys CTK: Richie Cunningham Drains The #3

Yes, really. Richie Cunningham had his first interaction with the Dallas Cowboys in 1994 when they signed the undrafted kicker out of Louisiana-Lafayette. Unfortunately during training camp that year he was beaten out by the Greatest 18 in Dallas Cowboys History, Chris Boniol.

In 1997 Cunningham made his way back to the Cowboys and not only did he make the team – he was a First-Team All-Pro. That 1997 season was very productive for Richie as he converted 34 successful field goals, a statistic in which he led the NFL.

#3: Richie Cunningham

The number 3 on his jersey also stood for the amount of years that he wore it for the Cowboys. From 1997-1999 Richie Cunningham made 75 field goals for the Dallas Cowboys, the 4th most in franchise history.

Cunningham converted on 79.8% of his field goals throughout his Cowboy career. When #3 trotted out there, chances were pretty high that he was going to bring you 3 points. The hat trick belongs to Richie Cunningham as he is the Greatest 3 in Dallas Cowboys History.

Check back tomorrow to find out who the Greatest 2 in Dallas Cowboys History is!
