Cowboys Draft: Predicting Day 2

The Dallas Cowboys shocked the masses last night when they decided to draft running back Ezekiel Elliott number four overall, despite defensive back Jalen Ramsey still on the board. Clearly the Cowboys believe that Elliott is a special player, even though the running back position has been devalued somewhat over the past several years. I personally have been on the Elliott hype train from the beginning and was elated when I heard NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell announce his name as the Cowboys selection. I even went as far as writing an article yesterday pleading the Cowboys not to draft Jalen Ramsey. I really can express enough how much I love the Cowboys decision to draft Ezekiel Elliott.

I honestly believe he was the right choice and the most impactful player in the 2016 draft class.

Luckily for us, the draft is just getting started and we now get to sit back and anticipate what other rookies will be joining Elliott as a member of the Cowboys.

So, I’ll share with you who I believe the Cowboys may draft in a few hours on day 2 of the 2016 NFL Draft.

Round 2- Pick 34

Noah Spence, DE, Eastern KentuckyCowboys Draft - Cowboys Draft: Predicting Day 2

My analysis: Noah Spence is arguably one of the best pass rushers in the entire 2016 draft class, but due to his past history of drug related problems he slips to the Cowboys in the second round.

Sound familiar?

The Cowboys were in a similar situation last year the second round when Randy Gregory slipped because of his drug-related problems and we all know how that turned out.  Gregory will miss the first four games of the season for violating the league’s substance abuse policy.

DeMarcus Lawrence is also facing a four-game suspension, but has appealed the league’s decision and we are still waiting to find out the verdict.

So, why draft another DE with a questionable past?

Spence seems to have turned his life around and turned his focus on resurrecting his career. He has sent out his past 20 drug test results to all 32 NFL teams.

I personally would be willing to take a chance on him and I think the Cowboys will strongly consider him with the 34th overall draft pick.

Round 3-Pick 67

Kendall Fuller, CB, Virginia TechCowboys Draft - Cowboys Draft: Predicting Day 2 1

My analysis: Much like the defensive in position, the Cowboys need help in the secondary.

Kendall Fuller is one of my favorite CBs in the entire draft and if not for a knee injury that cut is 2015 season short, I believe he would have been in the first round conversation.

I think Fuller is exactly the type of CB that defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli would like for his defense.

Fuller is more than capable of playing in any defensive scheme and can play press or zone coverages equally. He has receiver like skills for a defensive back and is able to go up and catch the ball at the highest point.

Fuller accumulated 35 pass deflections and eight interceptions in 28 starts at Virginia Tech, and we all know the Cowboys could use more turnovers in the secondary.

I really like the idea of drafting Fuller in the third round. Not only would he be a welcome addition at CB, but he could probably make the transition to safety and be as equally good at that position as well.

Well, there you have it that’s the direction I think the Cowboys may go later this evening. Let me know your thoughts and opinions in the comment section below.

  1. I have to say I was against picking Zek with the number 4 pick until about a week ago then after really breaking down the options I was fully on board the Zek train. Now I have been against picking Spence until a couple days ago but now I would love to have him wearing a Star. And as far as Fuller goes I have been wanting us to draft him ever since I started watching film and reading about this years cornerback prospects. So in closing I really hope this is how the next two picks go and if they do I will do backflips

    • I think they'll start looking at QBs in the third round. I doubt if Hackenberg will still be there though.
