It’s Senior Bowl time!

The braintrust of the Dallas Cowboys is fully entrenched in all things surrounding Mobile, AL this week as Jason Garrett and his Staff are coaching in the game for collegiate seniors.

Cowboys Blog - Finding The Next Dallas Cowboy At The Senior Bowl 1

The Cowboys Coaches will be heading the North Squad in this year’s game. There are a ton of great prospects on the both squads, but one name that Cowboys fans are paying a lot of attention to does in fact have his compass pointing North… Mr. Carson Wentz.

It’s been said a lot since we knew that the Cowboys would be coaching up Carson (say that five times fast!) that they’ll find out everything there is to know about him, and if he’s their guy… they’ll fall in love. Well, while that’s true, I got to thinking… who else might they fall in love with and will that love be true?

I dug through some Senior Bowl Archives to see just how frequently a team coached a player in the Senior Bowl and then drafted him a few months later. Here are the instances where that did indeed happen:

Senior Bowl Coaching Staff Player Position Round Selected
2010 Miami Dolphins John Jerry Tackle 3
2011 Buffalo Bills Kelvin Sheppard Linebacker 3
2011 Buffalo Bills Chris White Linebacker 6
2012 Minnesota Vikings Harrison Smith Free Safety 1
2012 Minnesota Vikings Audie Cole Linebacker 7
2012 Washington Redskins Keenan Robinson Linebacker 4
2012 Washington Redskins Alfred Morris Running Back 6
2013 Oakland Raiders Nick Kasa Tight End 6
2013 Detroit Lions Larry Warford Offensive Line 3
2013 Detroit Lions Michael Williams Tight End 7
2014 Atlanta Falcons Ra’Shede Hageman Defensive Tackle 2
2014 Atlanta Falcons Dezmen Southward Cornerback 3
2014 Jacksonville Jaguars Telvin Smith Linebacker 5
2014 Jacksonville Jaguars Chris Smith Defensive End 5
2015 Tennessee Titans David Cobb Running Back 5

Interesting.

Every year since 2010 a coaching staff from the Senior Bowl has drafted one of their own. Six times since 2010, 12 total staffs in that time span so 50%, a team has drafted not one but two players that they coached down in Mobile.

Who will be the player(s) that the Cowboys draft from the Senior Bowl if they choose to do so? That’s what they’re there to figure out. Whoever it is, odds are pretty good that one of the players from the North Squad (which you can see right here) is going to be wearing a Star on his helmet in 2016.

  1. That list looks like a candy store! There are a number of guys I would like to see them go after, obviously depending on where they might fall. Oiginally I was leaning towards pulling the trigger on a QB at #4 but the more I have thought about it I no longer think that is the best move. That would probably preclude Wentz from going to the Cowboys unless they make some trades (if you are to buy in to the Wentz hype). This is my list of candidates by position: CB Eric Murray Maurice Canary DE Carl Nassib DT Austin Johnson Vernon Butler Adolphus Washington LB Tyler Matakevich Kyler Fackrell Joe Schobert Joshua Perry QB Carson Wentz S Miles Killebrew Tyvis Powell Darian Thompson RB Kenneth Dixon WR Leonte Cardio Braxton Miller I'm pretty sure one of our picks is on this list.
