Randy Gregory has filed reinstatement papers with the NFL in the hopes of rejoining the Dallas Cowboys ahead of the 2019 season. If he is indeed reinstated, it could put the Cowboys in a tough situation as to who they decide to start opposite DeMarcus Lawrence, Randy Gregory or Robert Quinn?
The Dallas Cowboys sent a 2020 sixth-round draft pick to the Miami Dolphins earlier this offseason to acquire Robert Quinn. It's unknown if this was a trade based purely on trying to upgrade the position or maybe more of an insurance policy. Regardless, I think we can all agree Quinn okayed the deal to come to the Cowboys with the idea he would start. Gregory's reinstatement could complicate that.
The Dallas Cowboys clearly value Randy Gregory. They've continued to stand by him despite his inability to abide by legal rules. But, do they value him enough to come in and compete for the starting gig? I kinda have my doubts, but it could be something to keep an eye on if No. 94 is able to rejoin the team at some point in training camp.
Surprisingly, Gregory and Robert Quinn did have similar production in 2018. Quinn played 58.31% of the defensive snaps last year with the Dolphins and accumulated 38 tackles, 6.5 QB sacks, and two forced fumbles. Gregory played 44.63% of the defensive snaps with the Cowboys last year and had 25 tackles, six QB sacks, and two forced fumbles.
Production wise, it's hard to differentiate between the two players based on what they accomplished last year. The only real difference is their age. Quinn just turned 29 years old in May and Gregory will turn 27 in November. Two years doesn't seem like all that much, but due to Gregory's time away from the game due to suspensions, his body hasn't taking nearly the pounding Quinn's has over the years. That could factor into the equation.
Randy Gregory of course first has to be reinstated though. Then it has to be in time to prove he's just as capable of a starter as Robert Quinn in training camp practices and preseason. If he's able to accomplish all this though it could make for an interesting offseason, at least what's left of it.
Anyway this shakes out, it's a good problem to have for the Dallas Cowboys. Defensive Coordinator Rod Marinelli likes to rotate his defensive lineman, meaning Gregory and Quinn will both get plenty of playing time. Having two fresh pass rushers opposite DeMarcus Lawrence should be fun to watch in 2019.
