Report: Cowboys Sign QB Luke McCown, WR Javontee Herndon

With much of the football world wondering if the Cowboys would bring in a veteran quarterback presence to compete with young Kellen Moore in training camp, we might’ve finally got our answer.

It has been announced Dallas is signing quarterback Luke McCown to a one year deal, just in time for week two of training camp.

Excited for QB Luke McCown agreeing to a 1 year contract with the @dallascowboys

I’ll leave my opinion on the signing out of this, as I still would like to study McCown further before being too hard-lined in my take.

Regardless, McCown was the backup for Drew Brees in New Orleans since 2013, and has bounced around the league since being drafted in the fourth round of the 2004 NFL Draft.

I anticipate we will see some McCown during this elongated Cowboys preseason.

Dallas is also signing wide receiver Javontee Herndon after working out multiple wide-outs following the release of Lucky Whitehead.

Herndon has spent his entire two year career with the Chargers, after signing there as an undrafted free agent in 2014. Herndon has just 24 receptions for 195 yards and no touchdowns thus far in the league.

I don’t think the plan is for McCown to compete with K Moore as you seem to state. The plan is for K Moore to get the 2nd team reps and 2nd team playing time in preseason games. McCowan will compete for the 3rd team QB position. If K Moore really screws up in practice and preseason games, yes then after a few games, McCowan could get a chance at 2nd team QB. I expect K Moore to play well so this should not be an issue.

I don’t see this front office bringing in a 26-year-old with 13 seasons to be QB3. That’s not at all consistent with how they’ve managed the QB position since even before Garrett’s time. This feels far more like a way to push Kellen and have real competition for the backup job. Otherwise, I think they’d have just brought in another young prospect to compete with Rush for the third spot.
