Cowboys hire struggling coach, hope to get the best out of him

The Dallas Cowboys coaching staff up to this point outside of the head coach is not actually half bad, but the team hired a questionable name yesterday afternoon, and not sure fans are going to be thrilled with it.

At around 3 PM CT time, the Dallas Cowboys hired former Browns and Bills offensive coordinator, Ken Dorsey to the staff.

Dorsey has really struggled the last couple of years as an offensive coordinator. It started with the Bills, and then a year ago with the Browns. He was fired from both rolls in a matter of 12 months.

Dorsey’s Struggles

According to reports from NFL Network’s Mike Garafalo, the Cowboys have their eyes set on hiring former Cleveland Browns offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey to an offensive assistant role on the staff.

It is said that he will be tasked with watching film and being a scheme generalist.

Dorsey was fired by the Browns last season after a disastrous season in which Cleveland finished last in the NFL in scoring offense.

Before his time in Cleveland, Dorsey was the offensive coordinator for the Buffalo Bills, guiding an offense that finished No. 2 in the NFL in both scoring and total yards in 2022. That year, Bills star QB Josh Allen 4,283 yards and 35 touchdowns with 14 interceptions, and rushed for seven more scores.

However, Dorsey was fired from that job in the middle of the following season after a poor start for the team in which they went 5-5 and had six-straight games of scoring 25 points or less.

So he now lands with a team that will probably struggle with the roster that they have, and who knows, he could be the next guy in line if somehow he sticks around on the staff after Brain is let go, because he will at some point in the future.

I mean I guess a guy on the staff like this is needed, I am not sure what good it will do, but I honestly would have rather had him be the QBs coach. He made Josh Allen really take the next step a few years ago.

Overall Coaching Staff

Matt Eberflus is a retread if you want to call it that, but still comes from being out of the organization for nearly 10 years.

He spent seven seasons on Jason Garrett’s staff from 2011-2017 as linebackers coach and pass game coordinator.

Following his first stint in Dallas, Eberflus took his first defensive coordinator position with the Indianapolis Colts in 2018. He’d spend four seasons in Indianapolis before the Bears him to be their next head coach in 2022.

Let’s get this straight, he is not a good head coach, but as a defensive coordinator, he has a solid track record.

His defenses were among some of the best in the league at taking the ball away and defending the run, but ultimately couldn’t find ways to win games.

Now this hire is a bit of a gross one. Nick Sorensen is the former defensive coordinator of the 49ers, a role in which he was not good in.

He takes over as the special teams coordinator for Dallas, a job he had in Jacksonville in 2021.

He had an eight-year tenure with the Seahawks as an assistant special teams staffer and, later a defensive backs coach.

It seems like the fan base really likes Klayton Adams though.

Adams joined the Cardinals staff after Jonathan Gannon was hired as their head coach in 2023. He spent the previous four years with the Colts as an assistant offensive line coach and tight ends coach.

So it seems that this coaching staff is rounding into form. They also have some others they hired, but these are the big names you might see/hear from in the coming months.
