Round 1: (Trade) Calvin Pryor, FS, Louisville
Trade Scenario: As soon as the Pittsburgh Steelers say their top two cornerbacks get selected ahead of them, they pulled the trigger on Jason Verrett. This selection allowed the Kansas City Chiefs to jump the Baltimore Ravens by trading with the Cowboys to select the best remaining wide receiver, Marquis Lee.
Trade: Cowboys give up 16 overall for picks 23 and 88 from Kansas City.
Pryor is the prototypical center-fielding free safety. He possesses great range, instincts and top end closing speed. He’s a reliable open-field tackler who pursues with good angles and excellent technique. Pryor possess great awareness and above average instincts that allow him to make big plays.
The Cowboys have needed an upgrade at the safety position for sometime. For years they have tried to mix and match mediocre talent in hopes of putting together the right mix of players. Pryor allows them a high level talent who can lead this defense for the next decade.
I love the Telvin Smith pick but I think but I think they should look at him as a possible safety. Position flexability always makes a player more attractive.
I don’t know. Smith as a safety just reminds me of Roy Williams and I think the ‘Boys need a real ball-hawk in the secondary. But if he’s quick as Bo says then maybe pass disruption could make him a good enough fit. Certainly a lot of room for improvement over the current personnel.
