Round 3 (via Kansas City): Telvin Smith, OLB, Florida State University

Telvin Smith is being drafted here but it isn’t all because of his football ability. The truth is that the Cowboys need a fiery, fierce competitor with leadership qualities and that’s what Smith brings.

A rangy linebacker who is quick in pursuit and plays with a mean-streak, Smith is a great addition to the Cowboys defense. Smith is a solid tackler who reads and reacts better than most players. He displays excellent tackling technique and doesn’t find himself in a bad position often. Possesses a high motor and a “lead-by-example” attitude that never takes a play off.

Despite attractive qualities as a player, he also has some deficiencies. Mostly, Smith needs to improve his ability to shed blocks. Once engaged, he sometimes struggles to shed and misses an opportunity to make a play. Additionally, Smith can over-pursue and doesn’t have elite strength for the position. Still, Smith offers an upgrade a injection of youth to a position that sorely needs a playmaker.

  1. I love the Telvin Smith pick but I think but I think they should look at him as a possible safety. Position flexability always makes a player more attractive.

    • I don’t know. Smith as a safety just reminds me of Roy Williams and I think the ‘Boys need a real ball-hawk in the secondary. But if he’s quick as Bo says then maybe pass disruption could make him a good enough fit. Certainly a lot of room for improvement over the current personnel.
