Bold Predictions: Ezekiel Elliott Wins Offensive Rookie of the Year

While it may be premature to pronounce the Cowboys’ first round pick Ezekiel Elliott Offensive Rookie of the Year, it’s still well within his reach. In fact, it’s very attainable for Zeke. Just look at the running backs to win Rookie of the Year in the past. For example, take the 2015 OROY, LA Rams running back, Todd Gurley. Gurley finished with 27 votes to win the award.

Is the Defensive Backfield Still a Concern?

Given the option of Ezekiel Elliott or Jalen Ramsey, the Cowboys opted for Elliott. I’m thrilled Elliott will be playing for Dallas and I’m rubbing my hands together in anticipation for Week 1.  While the idea of Ramsey paired with Byron Jones and Orlando Scandrick seemed exciting, that fantasy is not reality. So in reality is the secondary fine the way it is, or could it have used more attention in the draft? Many would agree that, at this point, the Dallas Cowboys’ achilles heel is the defensive line.

Tyrone Crawford Could Help Cowboys at DE

With the pass rush still a question mark in Dallas, many are looking for other players to rise to the occasion. As DeMarcus Lawrence and Randy Gregory look at a four game suspension, it may be the Cowboys’ best option to have the defensive line’s most courageous player switch to defensive end. I call him courageous because following the 2014 season, he won the Ed Block Courage Award. The award goes to a player who exemplifies the principles of sportsmanship and courage. Other nominees included Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski and Lions wide receiver Calvin Johnson.

Does Charles Tapper Start Week 1?

Probably the biggest problem the Cowboys face is the shallowness of their defensive line, specifically the defensive end position. With Greg Hardy and Jeremy Mincey gone, and Demarcus Lawrence and Randy Gregory facing four game suspensions, it is clear the Dallas Cowboys need help at defensive end. Who will be available to rush Eli Manning against the Giants in Week 1? As of now, the starter at LDE is Ryan Russell, followed by Charles Tapper, Benson Mayowa and then Caleb Azubike. At RDE, the depth chart lists David Irving then Michael McAdoo and finally Neill Jason.

How Cowboys Rookies Compare To Their Predecessors

In a few weeks, if not already, every rookie draft pick will be an alumni from somewhere. No matter where their careers take them, they’ll never forget where they came from. Before they officially play their first snap on an NFL stage, we’ll evaluate the NFL careers of players at the same position, from the same alma mater as the Dallas Cowboys’ 2016 draft class. Maybe it’s an indication on how their careers will unfold. Ohio State University Running Backs Before Eliott, another notable Buckeye running back to be drafted in the NFL would be Archie Griffin.

What Roger Staubach and Jaylon Smith Have in Common

Per usual, the Cowboys are taking a lot of heat. What else is new? The Cowboys almost always have a target on their back that haters aim their criticisms at; it comes with the territory of being America’s Team. The Cowboys’ draft received a “C” grade from experts, due in part for taking a chance on two players. They took Jaylon Smith in the second round, in spite of his knee injury that may prevent him from seeing the field until next season.

Job Security: Post Draft Speculation

With the draft over and undrafted rookie signings trickling in, job security may be looking, well, less secure for some Dallas Cowboys. Of course, as I’ve said in previous articles, when it comes to football, nothing is given – everything is earned. The new guys, for the most part, will have to earn their starting spots and work hard to keep them. Still, there are Cowboys on the roster that could be bumped to the practice squad or other teams. Quarterback Fingers crossed that Tony Romo is healthy for all of the 2016 season.

How 4 Games Without Gregory & Lawrence Impacts Draft Plans

With our defensive line in shambles, it doesn’t help when two of our most talented DE’s are suspended for substance abuse. It also shouldn’t surprise us, seeing as this isn’t their first offense. The Cowboys eventually took Randy Gregory sixtieth overall in last year’s draft despite his off the field issues. Gregory said at the time, “The franchise that drafts me won’t have to worry about me off the field, but the teams that didn’t select me will have to worry about me on the field.” Well, in mid-February, we learned that Gregory will be off the field for four games precisely because of his off the field behavior.
