Cowboys tight end prospect Connor Hamlett suffered an ankle fracture toward the end of last night’s preseason loss to the Los Angeles Rams. While no exact timetable has been confirmed, it will likely end Hamlett’s season and any shot at making the Dallas roster or practice squad.

Hamlett, a 6’7″ tight end entering his third season, join the Cowboys in January when the team signed several players to futures contracts. After going undrafted in 2016, Hamlett bounced between the practice squads of the Jaguars, Eagles, and Saints that year. Last season, he caught on with the Browns and ended up playing playing in three games, recording a single catch for a 17-yard touchdown.

The Cowboys were unlikely to have room for Hamlett on this year’s team. The tight end position is well stocked with Jason Witten, James Hanna, Geoff Swaim, and Rico Gathers in place. They also have undrafted rookie Blake Jarwin, who has been visible in the first two preseason game, as a practice squad candidate.

Given that he has a fracture, Hamlett will likely be placed on injured reserve within the next few days.

  1. Hamlett was toast in Dallas of course. Maybe he can get to a camp next year. Figure Hanna on the bubble now also, 2 of 2 nice games for Gathers.
