Cowboys Sophomores: S Byron Jones

The 2015 Dallas Cowboys did not exactly leave us with many bright spots heading into the off season. Of course, that is not to say that through the fog of a 4-12 campaign there were not players that overwhelmingly stood out and provided some hope for 2016. From their 2015 draft class, first round selection Byron Jones was impressive all season long in the secondary. Drafted out of UCONN mainly because of his off-the-charts athleticism and Combine numbers, Jones was asked to play as an outside corner, inside corner, free safety, and single-high safety all in his rookie season. Byron was always ready for the challenge, sticking to targets in coverage no matter where he was lined up.

Eric Weddle Honors Dallas Cowboys Legend With Ravens Jersey Number

It’s been almost three months since I campaigned for the Dallas Cowboys to sign then Free Agent Free Safety Eric Weddle. A lot can change in that amount of time. Since then Weddle has signed with the Baltimore Ravens, the NFL Draft has come and gone, and the Dallas Cowboys did indeed add a Safety – Kavon Frazier in the 6th Round of the 2016 NFL Draft. You can get to know Kavon Frazier by listening to his appearance on the #RJOShow. He spoke to me just one day after being drafted by the Dallas Cowboys.

A Long Road Ahead For JJ Wilcox

OTA’s are finally getting started this week which means that position battles and fights for roster spots are about to kick off. Of course, the real battles won’t be decided until Training Camp opens up in late July and the team has a chance to evaluate the players while they play actual football. For a few Cowboys veterans, however, the battles have already begun. Last week, I discussed the ever fading chances for Darren McFadden to make this roster and have an impact in 2016. McFadden is going to have to compete with the 4th overall pick in this years draft, a new free agent addition who is clearly the better scheme fit, and now another 6th round pick who seems to have all the youth, athleticism, and breakaway speed which McFadden lacks.

Does Wilcox Have a Fighting Chance at FS?

The Cowboys haven’t officially announced any changes to the depth chart and probably won’t until training camp. If the rumors that are circulating prove true, then Byron Jones will be moving to free safety next to Barry Church full time. This leaves J.J. Wilcox, a free agent after the 2016 season scheduled to earn $1.

Draft Film Review: Cowboys FS Kavon Frazier

The safety position has been characterized by inconsistent play for the Cowboys for the past few seasons. The team seems to think that Byron Jones has a chance to solidify himself as the starting Strong Safety as early as next season, and I tend to agree with this assessment of Jones. However, while Barry Church and JJ Wilcox have their strong points, they also have a ton of deficiencies which are evident whenever you turn on the tape. Both Church and Wilcox have struggled with taking poor angles, resulting in missed tackles and big plays for the offense (see CJ Spiller’s overtime touchdown). Due to these deficiencies, we knew that the Cowboys needed to address the safety position at some point in the 2016 NFL Draft.
