The Dallas Cowboys have selected Offensive Tackle Tyler Smith from Tulsa with their 1st-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft.
Originally from Forth Worth, TX, Smith was a redshirt sophomore for the Golden Hurricane in 2021. He started at left tackle, a position that could soon be open in Dallas as Tyron Smith’s health and performance are in decline.
While he has NFL potential as a tackle, Tyler’s game as a powerful, mauling blocker could also allow him to help the Cowboys as their new left guard in 2022.
David Helman on Twitter: “My guess is that Tyler Smith will compete for the LG spot from the jump. With maybe an idea that he can bump out to tackle in the future if need be.The back half of the first is basically a jumble of guys with 2nd round grades, and the Cowboys combo of grade + need won out. / Twitter”

Welcome to the Dallas Cowboys, Tyler Smith!
The Patriots took a guard who people think is a 3rd rounder. No one really knows until they play the game!
IMO, and I hope I am wrong, but smells like a pretty bad reach. Especially when T Linderbaum, J Johnson, D Lloyd, D Wyatt were picked RIGHT AFTER. Agree with Tom Downey, BOOM or BUST prospect, which you DON’T do in the 1st round. First rounders should be pretty much plug and play, which this guy doesn’t appear to be.
Something tells me FO thinks he is the second coming of Larry Allen???
Love this pick. A big nasty road grader. Put him at guard and watch him pancake who ever is in front of him. If we can’t stop the run then we better get someone who can keep the run game going. This is not Connor Williams who was constantly getting blown off the ball because he was to light in the ass. Now let’s get a run STOPPER.
This pick was a necessity because they could not develop a player they already had at this position and had to let go. They could have been more aggressive and moved up for a better option for the O line. I would have preferred going with Jermaine Johnson. He would have been a nice replacement for Gregory. Tyler Smith is an ok pick that with any luck may grow into Tyron’s replacement someday, but Johnson would have been a beast for this D.
This was a bad move IMO. You don’t draft a project in the first round. They need to replace Gregory, so not taking Johnson there is a big head scratcher. It still would have filled a position of need and also would have been one of (if not the) best player on the board at that point. It was a WIN-WIN, but not in Jerry’s world.
