Cowboys hosting 30 prospects at The Star this week

The Dallas Cowboys are hosting some top prospects entering the NFL draft this week at the Star. Thirty prospects will be in Dallas this week.

Since Mike McCarthy took over as the head coach, they have drafted excellent players who have been to The Star on a top-30 visit.

I understand the Cowboys will not reach their goal of winning a Super Bowl by drafting these guys, but right now it is all we have to talk about.

Yet, with them doing absolutely nothing to clear space and sign free agents, this is what we are left to talk about right now.

The NFL draft is in less than four weeks, and guys like Micah Parsons, Mazi Smith, Sam Williams, Eric Scott Jr., Malik David, and Markquese Bell were all 30 visits under McCarthy.

Now, this doesn't mean you have to be a top 30 player; it just means the Dallas Cowboys have selected their top guys to bring to the facility for a look.

Some are projected to go as high as the first round, and others are in day 2.

Running backs Trey Benson, Bucky Irving, and Braelon Allen are among those at the star.

It is also filled with offensive linemen such as Jackson Powers-Johnson, Taliese Fuaga, and Graham Barton.

Expect the Cowboys to draft the most significant need on the team as we sit right now in the first round: offensive tackle.

Then they can do whatever they want because with Jerry Jones, who knows what will happen.

Hometown Heroes

Today, Wednesday, April 3rd, the Cowboys hosted Texas running back Jonathan Brooks, tight end Ja'Tavion Sanders, and defensive tackle Byron Murphy.

Brooks entered the league with 266 touches, 212 of which came in his final 11 games.

As a junior, Brooks averaged 6.1 yards per carry while running for 1,139 yards and 10 touchdowns.

He impressed on all three downs, making 25 receptions for 286 yards and a touchdown.

I don't see Dallas taking Murphy, as he is projected to go in the first round, but you never know.

In 2024, he had 29 tackles and five sacks.

Numerous outlets named him the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year, a First-Team All-Big 12 member, and an All-American.

If he is still there at pick 24, and the Cowboys don't want to draft an offensive lineman, I would be okay with drafting Murphy.

I don't see Mazi Smith taking a second-year leap, so picking him last season will cost them. They lost Johnathan Hankins and two other starters on the defensive line, so he is probably worth a shot.

Won't Change The Season

Regardless of who they drafted, the Cowboys got worse as they entered 2024.

They knew this was going to happen five months ago and didn't redo the deal with Dak Prescott.

They could have quickly signed CeeDee Lamb and Micah Parsons to extensions and created probably around 50 million in cap space, yet Jerry Jones wants to do things his way, and that is the only way.

The Houston Texans did what the Cowboys should have done years ago when Prescott was on a rookie deal, load up.

They just traded for Stephon Diggs, along with all the other things they have done this offseason.

Not saying Dallas hasn't been loaded, but look around, teams are getting better when they can. The Cowboys on the other hand, are not, because they are run by owners who only care about the media/brand.

I hate that all we have to talk about is the draft, and not a new exciting player added to a team that has won 12 games two years in a row.

Now they will be lucky if they win 9 games.

Heck, I wouldn't even be surprised if they are sellers at the deadline because outside of Lamb, Parsons, Diggs, and Zack Martin nobody is pulling their weight.

Very well could be a LONG 2024 season.
