The Dallas Cowboys will look to make it two wins in a row to begin the 2023 NFL season. But that’s not the only streak on the line this afternoon.

The Cowboys have won their last five games played in the second week of the season. They’ve won eight of their last nine Week 2 games overall.

A win today over the Jets would be Dallas’ second in a row over an AFC East team. They beat the Patriots in overtime in 2021.

The one streak Dallas is not looking to extend is a three-game losing streak to the Jets. The Cowboys last beat the Jets in 2007.

Against The AFC East

A win this afternoon would give the Cowboys eight wins against each of the four current AFC East teams all-time.

No matter the result, Dallas has a winning record against all four teams, including a 3-0 record in Super Bowls.

Record against AFC East teams:

  • Bills 8-5
  • Dolphins 8-7
  • Jets 7-5
  • Patriots 8-6

Week 2 By The Numbers

The Cowboys are 41-22 all-time in the second game of the season. In addition to the current five-game win streak, Dallas won five straight between 1975-1979.

But the team’s longest streak in Week 2 contests stands at 10 straight from 1964-1973.

Tom Landry’s Dallas Cowboys went 2-0 to start every season between 1965 and 1973.

That streak partially overlapped with the Cowboys’ impressive 17-game win streak in season-opening games.

From 1965 through 1973, the Cowboys won their first two games every season. They made the playoffs in every year except 1965.

When opening the season with a win, Dallas is 25-14 overall in the second game of the season.

2-0 Part Of A Super Start

In Dallas’ eight Super Bowl runs, seven of them have begun with 2-0 starts.

Of the five Super Bowl wins, those seasons began with a 2-0 start. The lone exception has an asterisk, the 1993 season that started 0-2.

Emmitt Smith’s two-game holdout to begin the 1993 season had a lot to do with the Cowboys poor start that year.

In the Super Bowl years of 1970, 1971, and 1978 the Cowboys’ first loss came in the third game. In 1993 the first win came in the third game.

The 1992 season saw the first loss in the fourth game. In 1975 and 1995 the first loss was in game five. The 1977 season didn’t see a loss until the ninth game.

The Cowboys won the Super Bowl at the end of the 1971, 1977, 1992, 1993, and 1995 seasons.

A First Time

The Cowboys have never played the Jets this early in a season before.

Surprise addition to the Week 2 injury report could hamper Cowboys offense vs Jets

After today’s game, there will only be four NFL franchises that Dallas has not played in the first two weeks of any of their 64 NFL seasons.

Those four teams are:

  • Packers (Earliest meeting, Week 3 in 1972 and 2008)
  • Ravens (Earliest meeting, Week 6 in 2012)
  • Raiders (Earliest meeting, Week 4 in 1998)
  • Patriots (Earliest meeting, Week 3 in 1981)

ALL-TIME WEEK 2 RECORD VS. OPPONENTS

  • Giants 10-3
  • Commanders 5-2
  • Cardinals 5-2
  • Titans 3-0
  • Saints 3-0
  • Eagles 3-2
  • Vikings 2-0
  • 49ers 2-0
  • Browns 2-1
  • Falcons 2-1
