Cowboys' WR Devin Smith Could Provide Sneaky Value as a Depth WR

The 2020 NFL season is right around the corner and roster moves are in full swing for the Dallas Cowboys. There’s quite a bit of talent at wide receiver on the roster. Amari Cooper, Michael Gallup, and CeeDee Lamb just may form the league’s best receiving trio this season. Also, Noah Brown and Cedrick Wilson have made great strides in training camp.

There’s one receiver, however, who seemingly didn’t make enough plays to stick around. According to Michael Gehlken of the Dallas Morning News, the Cowboys are releasing Devin Smith.

Smith is a former second-round pick of the New York Jets in 2015. Unfortunately, though, Smith’s time with the Jets never got a chance to blossom thanks to multiple ACL tears. He only caught 10 passes for 135 yards and a touchdown in three seasons with the Jets before being waived in July of 2018.

The Cowboys would sign him in January of 2019 and he played well enough in the preseason to earn a backup role. In Week 2 against the Washington Football Team last season, he caught three passes for 73 yards including a 51-yard touchdown. However, he would only play in two more games for the entire season catching just two passes for 39 yards.

Smith will likely see quite a bit of interest on the open market as the season approaches.

These early cuts show the class McCarthy brings to Dallas. He could have waited, hedging against injury before final cuts were due. Letting Smith, Thorson and Redmond go no will give each of them a leg up on other cuts in latching on with a new team. This philosophy will serve McCarthy and Dallas well in signing guys in the future….

I think Smith being cut comes down to no ST ability. I think we go with 6. You know Coop, Gallup and Lamb are 100% guaranteed. Ill say Wilson, Brown and Bryant are your other 3 to round them out. I can see us cutting Johnson but then PS him if he clears waivers.

Well, the 9ers could always use another WR.

Stop me if you’ve heard this one before: https://www.msn.com/en-us/sports/nfl/49ers-place-wide-receiver-tavon-austin-on-ir/ar-BB18Gjqg?li=BB15ms5q

So glad we didn’t re-sign him this season. Would’ve sucked up valuable reps better given to one of the rookies/young guys.

Was never a fan of T Austin. He had a few good yrs (with other teams) but always struck me as a small “gadget guy” who was one dimensional.
