The Dallas Cowboys seem to have zeroed in on their offensive coordinator.
The Cowboys front office, particularly Stephen Jones, has given clues as to who the next offensive coordinator will be.
I have come to realize Stephen is not nearly as good at hiding his intentions with absurd and crazy words and phrases as his father. So, what he says is usually a great sign of future things.
We have watched as the offseason for the Cowboys has progressed, with a new head coach, defensive coordinator, defensive line coach, passing-game coordinator, and special teams coach.
The next domino to fall will be the offensive coordinator, and the coach will be…
Klayton Adams will be the Offensive Coordinator
Klayton Adams is currently the Arizona Cardinals’ offensive line coach. He has been with the Cardinals since 2023 and will soon move on to the Cowboys as the offensive coordinator.
How do I know this, you ask? I do not have any insiders, like the big media. To take a line from Liam Neeson in the movie Taken: “But what I do have are a very particular set of skills, skills I have acquired over a very long career.”
There are signs everywhere,
According to an article from dallascowboys.com, Stephen Jones said,
“We want to be able to run the ball,” Jones said. “Everybody says that we want to run the ball and we want to stop the run, and certainly that’s what we want to do. That’s what great championship football teams do, and I know coach Schottenheimer wants to do that.”
“I think it’s real important that we find in this hire a coach that’s going to be outstanding in the run game area.
It doesn’t take a person trained in statement analysis to break down Jones’s statement.
What is wanted is someone who can help improve the run game and the offensive line and fit in with a head coach who wants to disguise plays so defenses cannot decipher whether they are runs or passes.
Klayton Adams has been outstanding in that area throughout his career, improving the run game with great offensive line play.
Klayton Adam has Helped Upgrade Run Games
We can go back to Klayton Adams’s time as a coach with the Pre-Coach Prime Colorado Buffaloes.
Adams significantly impacted Colorado during his six seasons, serving as co-offensive coordinator and offensive line coach in 2018 after two years as the offensive line coach and three years coaching running backs and tight ends.
He led running back Phillip Lindsay to become the first player in school history to rush for over 1,000 yards in consecutive seasons, with 1,474 yards in 2017 and 1,189 yards in 2016.
In 2016, the offensive line achieved its highest average yards per rush (4.1) in ten years.
In 2015, he helped six players rush for over 200 yards, a feat accomplished only three times before. In 2014, four players rushed for over 300 yards, marking a first for the program.
In 2020, Adams was crucial to the Colts’ offensive line, which allowed only 21 sacks—tied for the second-fewest in the NFL.
Rookie Jonathan Taylor rushed for 1,169 yards, becoming the fifth player in franchise history to surpass 1,000 yards in a season and finishing third in the NFL.
Quenton Nelson and Ryan Kelly earned All-Pro honors and made the Pro Bowl for the second consecutive year, solidifying their status as top players.
In 2021, Adams was promoted to tight end coach for the Colts. Klayton Adams led a formidable Colts offense that ranked second in rushing yards per game (194.4) and ninth in points per game (26.5).
His tight end group contributed significantly with 64 receptions, 724 yards, and seven touchdowns.
Running back Jonathan Taylor emerged as a standout, leading the NFL with 2,171 scrimmage yards, 1,811 rushing yards, and 18 rushing touchdowns while recording 10 games with 100 or more rushing yards.
He tied for the league lead with 20 total touchdowns and ranked 2nd in points scored (120) by a non-kicker.
Taylor set records for the Colts by achieving the most rushing yards and touchdowns in a season.
He became the third NFL player to score rushing touchdowns in at least 11 consecutive games and the youngest to reach 2,000 scrimmage yards and 20 scrimmage touchdowns in a season.
Two seasons ago with the Cardinals, Adams helped the team rank 4th in the NFL with 2,365 rushing yards, averaging 5.02 yards per carry and leading the league with four games over 200 rushing yards.
The 2023 season marked the Cardinals’ first top-five finish in rushing yards since 1970, and they recorded the fourth-most in franchise history.
The team topped the NFL with 23 runs of over 20 yards. Rookie Paris Johnson Jr. started all 17 games at right tackle, aiding James Conner in achieving his first 1,000-yard rushing season with 1,040 yards.
Klayton Adams may not be a big-name offensive coordinator, but he has a track record of helping take run games to the next level of productivity.
This hire would be the perfect pairing with Head Coach Brian Schottenheimer, as it would provide an experienced coach familiar with the offensive line and tight ends.
Adding Adams and a great offensive line coach could elevate this staff and team to elite status on the offensive side of the ball.
An upgraded running game and better offensive line play is what every Dallas Cowboys fan wanted last year. This could be the year when that wish comes true.
