Another day, another dollar is the old saying they say, but in this case–another day, uh, another minute we are closer to some Dallas Cowboys Football.
That sounds about right, right?
Anyways, we currently sit 85 days away from seeing the Cowboys take on Tom Brady and his Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and if you haven’t heard–I’m selecting the best player based on the jersey number that corresponds with the number of days left.
So far, I have crowned LS (Long Snapper) L.P. Ladouceur (91 days, #91), and WR Butch Johnson (86, #86) as the best players for their respective days, and I plan on making this a continuous series till opening day.
With that in mind, after debate over all the players who have worn Number 85, I crowned WR Kevin Williams as the Best 85.
Besides Williams, here are the other players who wore the Number 85 that were in consideration:
- Chris Brazzell
- Noah Brown
- Thornton Chandler
- Darrin Chiaverini
- Fred Cornwell
- Gene Cronin
- Steve Folsom
- Tim Hendrix
- Vince Mayle
- Dennis McKinnon
- Ernie Mills
- Jeff Ogden
- Kevin Ogletree
- Jamaica Rector
- Jeff Robinson
- Darnay Scott
- Tody Smith
- Rayfield Wright
Kevin Williams Dallas Cowboys Career
A second-round pick in the 1993 NFL Draft out of Miami, Williams arguably was one of the best KR/PR players that wore silver and blue. His most memorable game arguably came during his rookie season on Thanksgiving Day, when he scored all of the team’s points and had a 64-yard punt return in the snow.
Although listed as a WR, his special team’s abilities overshadowed his receiving contributions (even stemming back from his Miami Days), as he finished his Cowboys career with 98 receptions for 1,268 yards and 2 TDs.
In 1994, Williams became the first Cowboy ever to return a touchdown on a punt and kickoff during the same season, and in four seasons (with the Boys), he set franchise records for the number of kick returns (144), combined kick returns (239), and total return yards (3,416).
To put the cherry on top, Williams was also a part of the two Super Bowl-winning teams in the 90s (Super Bowl XXVIII and Super Bowl XXX).
His special team’s contributions will forever be etched into franchise history and in long-time fans’ memories, but I wish I was alive to see how electric he was for the team.
Nonetheless, Williams is my O.G #86, and be on the lookout for the player that gets crowned on Sunday (Best #84, 84 days).
