4. Safety

CURRENT: Byron Jones, Jeff Heath, Kavon Frazier, Robert Blanton

The signing of veteran Robert Blanton last week helped sore up a hole in the depth chart and provide some insurance in case Heath isn’t ready for the starting job. Still, it did not change the fact that Dallas could use a talent boost at safety.

Byron Jones is set as a starter for many years to come. Everything else is in question, though. Even if Heath works out as a starter, we’ve seen nothing of Kavon Frazier to know if he can play well in case of injury. The Blanton signing helps there, and is why I don’t have this as the #3 need.

Adding another safety talent gives Dallas options. If some combination of a new rookie, Heath, and Blanton can hold their ground at safety than perhaps Dallas can move Byron Jones back to cornerback. That’s not a goal but could be a good backup plan if they can’t add an immediate contributor at CB in this draft.

If nothing else, a talented rookie safety could wind up beating Heath for the starting job or at least upgrading the depth over Blanton and Frazier.
