The first day of padded practice started today and the moment it started, one player in the secondary jumped off the screen.
Cobie Durant, from the start of practice until the end, was making plays all over the place. It started with three pass breakups, and they continued to throw his way.
He was mainly back in the zone and would switch to man every now and again.
To be honest with you, some people take what we see in camp in July and August and think it is the biggest thing in the world. I am not here to do that with Durant. I am just saying, this should not shock anyone.
Cornerback Issues
When you look at this team, the biggest issue is the cornerback room and, honestly, it really is not even close.
Durant had five interceptions a year ago, and he comes over on a very good deal, and he will need to be the guy we are seeing through the first handful of days during Camp. A guy that we can trust, because how many of those does this room have right now?
Even if DaRon Bland is 100%, do you trust him like you did a few years ago when he set the pick-6 record?
Here is what I will note, it is camp.
The offense will have a good day one day and the defense will have a good day one day, but the fact that we are seeing the defense make plays this early, from Caleb Downs blowing up a run play in the gap, see video below, to guys like Durant making play after play in the secondary, is something we did not even see from a Matt Eberflus led defense a year ago.
The next in line behind Durant and Bland is Shavon Revel, who I still need to get on board with. I just don’t trust anything about it yet, but that is why they play the game and I don’t.
Then you have guys like Devin Moore and Caelen Carson who are just battling to be depth players.
It was like every time I got on Twitter to check out the next highlight that was coming through, it was another good play by Durant. He was the best player on the field Monday and if that is what they are going to get out of him 90% of the time, I will jump on his back and ride with him.
I say this every single week, but we have a long way to go until the first game of the season, and who knows, maybe today, Durant and the rest of the cornerback room won’t look as good, but credit to all of them for making plays today.
As we sit here right now, Durant is the one that I have the most confidence in. That is because he has done it constantly the last few years. Bland is your splash player, while the other young guys are not proven and more prone to penalties and whatever else.
A lot of training camp left to go, but dare I say these Cowboys run defense is not kidding around under Christian Parker.
There’s a wall out here today and LBs + nickels are filling EVERY gap. This is a great thing to see, but again, it is a camp, and we will see how things play out when they actually have pressure on them, but I am loving what I am seeing from them thus far.
They looked a bit slow last week, but that was without pads, and the moment they came on guys like Durant and others made sure to let them know this was not last years defense running around.
