Cowboys TE-by-committee needs to be consistent in 2023

Dalton Schultz is now a Houston Texan, and the Cowboys have three guys that need to step up to match the total production he leaves behind.

Worried is a strong word; I know Jake Ferguson, Luke Schoonmaker, and Peyton Hendershot will show up this season. The question is, can they do it constantly?

Jake Ferguson

Schultz was 's favorite target, but Ferguson from the Univerity of Wisconsin has shown flashes.

I really like him.

He played in 16 games last year but only caught 19 passes for 174 yards and two touchdowns.

I understand he was used as just a body on the field a year ago, but something about him makes me think he might have the first chance to be the guy atop the depth chart.

Luke Schoonmaker

When Dallas drafted Schoonmaker in the 2nd round, I was scratching my head.

He played for Michigan. He only caught 35 passes for 418 yards and three scores in his senior season a year ago.

I am not sold on him being the guy to solve the problem left behind after Schultz left.

The way Michigan played offense could have also affected his lower production.

Out of 131 FBS college football teams, the Wolverines ranked 120th in pass play percentage.

Michigan didn't throw the ball much last season, which could be why his numbers look like they do.

Oh, let's not forget, he has already suffered a Lisfranc injury during the team's first mandatory minicamp.

Then the team has Hendershot, who already dropped a pass in camp that led to an interception, so unless he REALLY pops off in training camp and preseason, he has no chance to be the lead guy.

Dallas likes their tight-end room, so look at a veteran like Marcedes Lewis or someone. They won't.

Just throwing it out there.

He also is at the point in his career where he doesn't need to be the go-to guy.

What is the one thing Dallas wants to do this year? Run the football with more.

Up tempo, get the ball out, so one of these guys must be an excellent hit-and-release guy.

Make your block and get out and be ready for the ball to his you in the hands.

If this one of the problems the Cowboys have in 2023, they will should be okay.

The Cowboys have three guys, and only ONE needs to show up each week. You are getting three for the price of one.

Just do your job and make sure you do it well enough to help the team win, just don't be the reason why they lose.

They will have growing pains. Let's see how thing shake out in training camp in about a week, and all the preseason games in August.
