Possible Options for the Cowboys' Next Defensive Coordinator

🥇🏈 Mike Zimmer

All the talk right now is surrounding Mike Zimmer. He's the number one favorite to take over from Dan Quinn and is viewed positively by Cowboys fans.

The reason behind this is that Zimmer's style (albeit not a carbon copy) is very similar to Quinn's, with both defensive coaches opting for an aggressive approach out on the field.

Sure, Zimmer can be an “acquired taste” as a coach, but there's definitely potential for him to build upon Quinn's work or tear it down entirely and stamp his own authority with a fresh plan.

However, it is worth mentioning that Zimmer hasn't officially coached since 2021, which is a long time ago in NFL terms.

Will his time away from the NFL lead to an inspired run as the defensive coach or a struggle to adapt?

🥈🏈 Al Harris

Next, there's Al Harris — the current defensive back coach for the Cowboys.

Al Harris is highly regarded in the NFL and has done a great job since joining the Cowboys as an assistant defensive coach back in 2020.

Now, after being in the job for several years, some fans believe that Al Harris could receive a huge promotion and make the step up to defensive coordinator.

The slight issue here is that (despite a 15-year NFL career and over 11 years of coaching history) the Cowboys are under a huge amount of pressure heading into the 2024-25 NFL season.

There's a general feeling that Harris isn't quite ready to make the jump.

It's likely that Head Coach will choose a more experienced defensive coordinator instead, but this remains to be seen for now.

🥉🏈 Don “Wink” Martindale, Former Giants DC

Don “Wink” Martindale is another potential candidate to become the Cowboys' next defensive coordinator.

With over 17 years of coaching experience in the NFL and an excellent track record, it would certainly be a safe appointment for the Cowboys to make.

Interestingly, Martindale is scheduled to interview for the job, so there's a chance that something could come of it.

The Cowboys are expected to announce a new defensive coach soon following the shock departure of Dan Quinn.

Mike Zimmer, Al Harris, and Don Martindale are just some of the options on the table, so keep an eye on the latest odds for more.
