The Dallas Cowboys used their bye week to reset, refocus, and reload on defense.
After battling through inconsistency and injuries, Matt Eberflus finally has a chance to get his full complement of defensive talent on the field.
Four key reinforcements — DeMarvion Overshown, Shavon Revel Jr., Logan Wilson, and Quinnen Williams — are set to take the field for the stretch run. Each one fills a major hole that’s plagued this defense through the first half of the season.
DeMarvion Overshown: A True Breakout Candidate in Year Two
Now in his second NFL season, Overshown looks poised to take a major step forward. His 2024 PFF data from his rookie campaign highlighted flashes of elite playmaking potential:
- Overall: 61.1
- Run Defense: 57.7
- Tackling: 39.9
- Pass Rush: 78.9
- Coverage: 56.9
- Stops: 38
Overshown’s Week 1 (88.6 DEF, 82.0 PRSH) and Week 4 (77.7 DEF, 82.7 COV) performances last year showed his range and burst.
When healthy, he’s one of the fastest linebackers on the roster — a perfect fit for Eberflus’ emphasis on pursuit, spacing, and team tackling.
Expect Overshown to play more freely now that he’s surrounded by veterans who can handle communication duties. His speed, instincts, and energy should give this defense a noticeable spark right away.
Shavon Revel Jr.: Rookie Precision and Smart Football
Rookie cornerback Shavon Revel Jr. out of East Carolina has quietly been one of the most technically sound defenders in college football over the past two years:
2024 (ECU): 84.0 DEF | 70.0 RDEF | 66.7 TACK | 59.8 PRSH | 85.4 COV
2023 (ECU): 80.5 DEF | 78.7 RDEF | 82.6 TACK | 52.1 PRSH | 83.5 COV
Those grades reflect the exact traits Eberflus looks for — discipline, balance, and smart pursuit angles. Revel doesn’t overrun plays, doesn’t panic in space, and communicates effectively.
Look for him to earn rotational snaps in nickel and sub packages, where his coverage awareness and tackling efficiency can shine against spread looks.
Logan Wilson: The Veteran Voice and Field General
One of the more under the radar trade deadline acquisitions in the league, Logan Wilson brings stability and leadership to the heart of this defense.
The former Bengal has developed a reputation as one of the NFL’s smartest and most instinctive linebackers.
Career Totals:
- 11 interceptions
- 179 stops
- 400+ tackles
Wilson gives Eberflus the kind of player who elevates everyone around him. His ability to read formations, make pre-snap adjustments, and anticipate route concepts instantly improves the Cowboys’ communication.
He’s also a proven finisher — a sure tackler who rarely takes false steps and thrives in high-traffic areas. Wilson allows Overshown to play fast and aggressive without sacrificing alignment or gap control.
Quinnen Williams: The Missing Piece in the Middle
The addition of Quinnen Williams completely transforms the Cowboys’ defensive front. One of the league’s premier interior disruptors, Williams brings the power and consistency this unit has lacked inside.
Career Production:
- 45 sacks
- 191 quarterback hurries
- 51 quarterback hits (7.2 QB hits a season on average)
- 213 Stops (Defensive Stops – tackles that constitute a “failure” for the offense)
Williams changes blocking schemes the moment he steps on the field. His quickness off the snap and ability to command double-teams create opportunities for Dallas’s edge rushers.
For Eberflus, who preaches gap integrity and front discipline, Williams provides a foundation for the entire defense. His impact will be felt even when he doesn’t record a stat — by collapsing pockets and forcing hurried decisions.
Eberflus’ Defense Finally Looks Complete
Matt Eberflus has emphasized effort, communication, and fundamentals since arriving in Dallas. But through the first half of the year, injuries and thin depth kept that vision from materializing.
Now, with these reinforcements, he finally has the personnel to execute it.
- Quinnen Williams anchors the front.
- Logan Wilson quarterbacks the defense.
- DeMarvion Overshown flies sideline to sideline.
- Shavon Revel Jr. brings dependable support and awareness.
For the first time, Dallas can match physicality with structure and speed. The improvement may not just be noticeable — it could be dramatic.
Reinforcements Have Arrived for Matt Eberflus
This is the defense Dallas has been waiting to see.
With Overshown’s development, Revel’s discipline, Wilson’s leadership, and Williams’s dominance up front, the Cowboys are finally equipped to play with confidence and purpose.
Eberflus now has his identity pieces — players who fit his demand for relentless pursuit and execution.
After the bye, expect the Cowboys’ defense to look faster, sharper, and far more dangerous.
Williams addition to the front line has to elevate Kenny Clark’s game at the other tackle spot. Clark has essentially been neutralized with double teaming as his productivity has declined as a result of it. Now opponents will have to adapt accordingly with Williams presence thus freeing up Clark to do his job in putting pressure in the pocket.
@Cody. Question: with Williams at 3T do you play Osa and the SDE?
My opinion, given the use of the 5 man line, it’s 41, 97, 92, 95, 42. Pretty impressive especially with 0 at WLB and 55 at MLB
I think these good additions can only help. Question is whether it makes a difference this year or next.
Overshown and Revel are 2 guys who have no good legs between them. Logan was on the bench for a mediocre defnse and Williams was huge overpay to get a slightly above average tackle to replace the massively overpaid Osa. Jerry has now spent a first , second plus about 40 million a year of cap looking for a defense tackle this year . That is true management incompetence.
Ravel is a small school rookie with two injured knees who has never even tried to cover a pro player in practice yet–please stop talking of him as any kind of reality.
Everyone has said for a couple of years that Osa Odighizuwa was a pro-bowl caliber player. Then they added Kenny Clarke, brought back Dante Fowler and added Jadeveon Clowney. Plus they have Sam Williams and Donovan Ezeiruaku. I don’t know why that defense has been so terrible. Adding Quinnen Williams is a big plus, but how can he make the rest of the unit play up to their hype? Linebacker is another bad story. Murray and Sanborn are slow as molasses! DeMarvion Overshown will make a big difference when he comes back. Hopefully Logan Wilson makes a difference as well, though I’ll believe it when I see it. But then, how do they address the defensive backfield. That is a huge problem. It seems they can’t cover anybody! Even Bland looks average at best. Is the rookie Revel going to step in and make any difference at all? It just seems like they have a large group of mediocre players who have had some good years in the past. Nothing to write home about!
