Things are finally starting to pick up for the Dallas Cowboys and training camp is in full swing. The first game of the season is less than a month away, and one thing to keep an eye on is a possible extension coming from the front office.
Last week during the first press conference for training camp, Stephen Jones said the Dallas Cowboys are “absolutely” willing to start long-term contract talks with defensive tackle Quinnen Williams, who they acquired via trade from the New York Jets a little less than a year ago.
I would love to see this happen before the season starts and get it done and out of the way so they only have one guy to really focus on next offseason if they want, and that would be George Pickens.

Williams comes from a lot of losing with the Jets, and all jokes aside, this team is clearly much better than the Jets and could get him to the playoffs for the first time in his career, and I think he knows that.
“I’ve definitely never been to the playoffs, and as a competitor, I want to win it all,” he said. “I want to win every single game if I can,” he said last week.
When asked about his current contract (which has two years remaining at over $46 million), Williams said he’s focused on winning.
“I’m not really focused on a contract,” Williams said. “I definitely want to be here for the long-haul. I definitely would enjoy and love being here for the long-haul, but I want to win. That’s the only thing I’m really focused on is winning.”
Either way, this isn’t the end of the world if they don’t get a deal done, but if they were to get it done before the season starts, it would probably help them in terms of what they have to deal with when the next offseason hits.
In terms of what he would probably get, I will take a guess at this just based on the other guys who signed not too long ago, and what Williams is actually probably worth. Let’s remember he is still a top 3-5 defensive tackle in the entire league.
Recently, Jalen Carter of the Eagles got a new deal worth an average of $38 million per year. Jeffery Simmons was next with $35.276, Chris Jones of the Chiefs, $31.75.
All three of those guys got new deals and reset the market each time. The others with big-time deals are Dexter Lawrence and Jordan Davis, and then it is Q for the Cowboys, currently with $24 million.
We have to be honest with ourselves here, if and when Dallas pays him, Williams will probably reset the market once again, just like the other guys did.
A deal would probably land in the $32 million to $36 million per year range, spanning 3 to 4 years.
The good news about that, though, is an immediate restructuring could also help the Dallas Cowboys lower their upcoming cap hits. That is the key thing to remember.
At the end of the day, paying Williams is a guy that will give you production every single year, and he has shown that. I don’t think this will be a DaRon Bland or Michael Gallup type deal where they just fall off the face of the earth when paid.
Williams has been that guy for years and, from what we have seen, as a Cowboy so far, has no plans to stop anytime soon, so I would get the deal done before the start of the season and let him be the monster that he is and change the way this new defense looks upfront.
