The Dallas Cowboys next coach could come with a plus one.
Everyone can see the writing on the wall about Mike McCarthy’s departure from Dallas after this season. The maligned coach is not getting the job done with his antiquated offense.
Not only is the offense not where it was expected to be after being a top offense the last few years, but the defense is also one of the worst in the league.
This is unacceptable for the Dallas Cowboys when so much was expected from the team.
This has led to rumors of a new head coach for America’s team.
Prime Time for the Cowboys
Deion Sanders is known for his huge personality, and where would that fit perfectly? The Dallas Cowboys’ enigmatic owner is all about the Cowboys being in the headlines, and this coach fits the mold for even more media coverage.
Coach Prime has transformed the Colorado Buffaloes from irrelevant to must-watch TV, and this is just what the Cowboys need.
This shot of energy would get the hype train going again for the Cowboys, even though it’s unnecessary—a hotshot new coach who can bring in talent and install plays that fit the talent.
Although Deion Sanders has expressed his satisfaction with being a college coach, transitioning to the NFL team that played a significant role in his rise to fame and helped him secure a Super Bowl ring would be an ideal next step in his career.
Michael Irvin was a teammate in the Super Bowl-winning season. Recently, Irvin interviewed Sanders on FS1 and confidently discussed the speculation surrounding Sanders as a strong candidate for the Cowboys’ head coach position.
Deion Sanders immediately shut down the conversation.
“Oh Lord, don’t start that,” Sanders said. “I love it where I am. I love it where I am.”
At that moment, Deion confidently led the FS1 crew on a video tour of his office, strategically situated inside Folsom Field, providing an impressive view of the mountains.
“Let me take the computer in here, because you’re starting to talk that talk. I love it where I am,” Sanders said.
He was quick to shut down the talk about moving on from Colorado, but what coach who has a chance to make a big bowl game would admit to moving on?
Sanders will continue denying the rumors until the season ends, at which point he will almost certainly start flirting with the NFL.
Michael Irvin Sales Pitch for the Next Coach
Michael Irvin is not afraid to share his opinion. In his customary animated ways, he is all on board with Deion Sanders becoming the next head coach of the Dallas Cowboys.
During an interview at the Mike Tyson and Jake Paul fight, Michael Irvin quickly threw Deion’s name out there with Jerry Jones sitting next to him. Even if it were a subtle push to get his former teammate the job, it would be a thing of the future.
Irvin said: “Everybody loves Mike, but everybody loves and respects Jake also for what he’s done here. To have an ability to not go the normal route and still end up right here. You give him respect. I give him respect like I give my great guy Deion Sanders, who didn’t go the normal route. Who I’m gonna be in Jerry’s ear about later. That’s just something else we’re talking about.”
Jerry Jones, who always sends cryptic messages about the Cowboys’ future, quickly changed the subject when Irvin brought up this topic.
A superstar Cowboys player turned coach would be the perfect story for Jerry Jones to run with, and the media would drool over the future headlines.
Deion Sanders Could Bring a Plus One to the Party
If Deion Sanders were to become the next head coach, he would bring one of the two current superstars on his team, but which one?
Deion has been very public about not letting Shedeur Sanders or Travis Hunter go to just any team. Could this mean he would be a package deal with one of his Colorado Buffalo players making the trip to Dallas with him?
The Dallas Cowboys signed Dak Prescott to a monster deal before the season’s first game, so a quarterback is not a need of the Dallas Cowboys.
Even if Deion wanted to bring his son along, the cap hit the Cowboys would take by trading Prescott would be astronomical. Here are the cap hit and details of Dak Prescott’s contract.
Dak Prescott’s $240 million extension keeps him with the Dallas Cowboys for at least a few more seasons, with cap hits of $89 million in 2025 and $68 million in 2026. Cutting or trading him would result in dead cap hits of $152 million in 2025 and $62 million in 2026. However, the Cowboys could save $34 million against the salary cap by moving before his roster bonus is due next March.
This contract cannot be easily traded unless the Cowboys are willing to eat some dead money. In addition to the dead money, Prescott has a no-trade clause, which means Dak Prescott can only be traded if he agrees to a move.
This is not good if Deion Sanders wants to bring in his son, who plays quarterback.
The player the Cowboys could use is Travis Hunter. The do-it-all wide receiver and cornerback could help in many facets for the Dallas Cowboys.
Assuming most coaches around the league do not know how to deploy a multi-talented player like Hunter, one coach does, and that is Deion Sanders.
The Cowboys will probably end the season with a high enough draft pick to be within striking distance of selecting Travis Hunter. If they cannot get close enough to get him, fans may see an Eli Manning-type draft drama until the Cowboys get their man.
This is just the type of draft-day drama Jerry Jones would love to have, especially if it involves his beloved Cowboys.
Putting Travis Hunter on the opposite side of CeeDee Lamb would be one of the best wide receiver duos in the NFL.
Not only would the receivers’ room benefit, but putting Hunter on defense alongside Trevon Diggs and DaRon Bland would make opposing quarterbacks second-guess every pass attempt.
The Dallas Cowboys could hire Deion Sanders as the next head coach and turn the NFL upside down. It would assuredly be a must-watch TV every time the Cowboys played.
Having a Coach Prime in silver and blue again would make this losing season a little more palatable for some fans. Getting Deion Sanders and Travis Hunter would put the Cowboys back into the conversation of winning a few Super Bowls.
