What’s The Dallas Cowboys’ Plan For QB2 In 2021?

The number one Dallas Cowboys focused storyline each day is Dak Prescott’s contract situation.

Do the Cowboys believe in him as their franchise guy? How can they not? Are they looking elsewhere for a potential starter?

All very important, and relevant, questions for the 2021 version of this team. But Dallas also has a big hole behind Prescott in that quarterback room right now.

Last season, the Cowboys signed veteran quarterback Andy Dalton to be Prescott’s backup, with the idea being that if Prescott were to go down they’d be able to trust in the longtime Bengals starter. Unfortunately, we got to see this plan play out, and Dalton produced up and down results en route to a 6-10 finish.

This Spring is setting up for a bit of a quarterback carousel around the NFL. At the top, stars like Aaron Rodgers and Deshaun Watson may be trying to force their way off their current teams. Then, veterans like Cam Newton and Jameis Winston will be hitting free agency, just to name a few. Then there are the youngsters like Sam Darnold, who the Jets may be looking to move on from.

We’re headed for unprecedented quarterback movement this offseason, so where does that leave Andy Dalton?Ben DiNucci

Dalton has made it increasingly clear that he wishes to be a starter somewhere in the league, but did his performance last season earn him a job? Probably not, I’d guess. His best bet would be to return to a team like the Cowboys as a backup, with the chance to start games with a good offense around him if the true starter goes down to injury.

He wants a chance to be the man once again, though, and who can blame him.

Behind Dalton the Cowboys had a carousel themselves last season.

Rookie Ben DiNucci started one game against Philadelphia, and I think I speak for all Cowboys fans when I suggest never experiencing that again. Garrett Gilbert played decently in his lone start against the Pittsburgh Steelers, and they even brought back Cooper Rush for depth at one point.

None of those three feel like a reliable backup option, but trusting an untrustworthy quarterback is basically the only option once your franchise guy goes down.

To be honest, it doesn’t matter all the much who backs up Dak Prescott. What’s really important is making sure Prescott is there at all.

What do you think?

  1. Don’t bring back Ben DiDouchy back , he no good , I like what i saw from Garrett Gilbert in that game vs steelers , showed a lot of guts vs. the then No.1 defense in the NFL with a pretty good arm but as far as backup IDK if we can rely on him 100% so i think we should take a look at Fitzpatrick , he was having a great year till he got benched (still don’t get that) for Tua and i think you could get him cheap cuz of his age

  2. Let’s just Stop all the Guessing&theory’s~The Dallas Cowboys Will NEVER see another Superbowl under Good Ol’Jurry Jones @ the Helm Dictating ALL the in’s & outs~It Seemed when he 1st purchased the Franchise He Was The Future…..Butttttttt…..He let Go of Jimmy to win only 1 Lone Bowl with Barry…….Awesome talent has come&Gone in the past 26yrs~Only 1thing has remained the same……Jerry&the Jones Family…….They have All but Ruined A Once Proud Dynasty……..Ran it completely in the Ground….Smh……Cowboys”USED” to be considered in the NFL’s Elite…..But thanks 2 the Jones Family Dallas has become the Laughing Stock of the NFLPlayers come here to Get PAID~Not Win Lombardi’s..26yrs is ProofSo Until Jerry Dies&The Jones Sell the Franchise…..Dallas WILL NEVER See Another Superbowl much less back 2 back

  3. Gilbert was more than just “decent” in his lone
game against Steelers, who were undefeated and had number one defense at that time. I think he would make a viable backup, if Dalton bolts. If Dalton stays on, he is a great backup.

Dalton actually was 5-5, if one includes the first Giant game WIN, when he put us in position to kick game winning FG game, after DP got injured. Why the insinuation that he was responsible for the 6-10 record???

That means Gilbert lost his single start, DiNucci lost his single start, and DP lost three out of his five starts. Let’s be real, very easily could have been four losses, if Falcons just fell on the onside kick that was rolling on the turf for ages.

BTW, a team would have to be foolish to sign Newton, IMO he’s done.

  4. Andy dalton is not a starter at all!!!!!!! He folded when it was time to go and win the game. Just go back and look at the tape. All the good qb’s come through when their team needs it most of the time. The way gilbert played against the steelers. He played very well. Andy dalton should have never seen the field again. Hes not a starter at all. The defensive coordinator mike nolan was a bad choice for that position. They stunk last year. If jerry can just move the hell out the way and let people just do their job. The cowboys will be in the top of the NFC all the time but we all know thats not gonna happen. When you win a super bowl and the coach leaves the next year. Its gott be something with the ownership. If he just gets out of the way and just signs checks. The cowboys could have won bout 8 or 9 super bowls by now. But ownership is staying in the way of that. I have been wanting to tell some guys this that play for dallas cowboys. Our defensive backs coach. Will you teach your DB’s at some point you gotta turn your head around and find the ball. They have killed dallas for so many years now it is pathetic. With all the penalties and cant get off the field. The defensive lineman be so worn out. You will never get a passrush. PLEASE SOMEBODY TEACH THE DALLAS COWBOYS DB’S TO TURN THEIR HEADS AROUND AT SOMEPOINT. WHEN THE RECEIVER LOOKS FOR THE BALL. YOU SHOULD BE LOOKING FOR THE BALL ALSO. ONCA AGAIN THEY HAVE BEEN KILLING YHE DEFENSE ALSO WITH ALL YHE PENALTIES AND CANT GET OFF THE FIELD. MAKES ME WANT TO CRASH MY TV EVERY DARN GAME. IF KELLEN MOORE IS THE OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR. PLEASE TWLL ME WHY DOES HE WAIT UNTIL WE ARE BEHIND ALL THE TIME TO START KILLING TEAMS WITH THE PASSING GAME. YEAH I UNDERSTAND YOU GOTTA KEEP TEAMS HONEST. OKAY NOW HONESTLY THE PASSSING GAME SHOULD HAVE BEEN KILLING EVERYTEAM LAST YEAR. STOP WITH ALL THE GADGET PLAYS AND TAKE THE BALL DOWNFIELD. IF THE QB CAN GET ANY KIND OF BLOCKING A WIDE RECEIVER SHOULD BE OPEN AT ALL TIMES. EVERYTIME WE ARE DOWN IN THE SECOND HALF AND START PASSING THE BALL WE SMOKE TEAMS. IF THE QB IS DECENT. JIMMIE JOHSON SAID IT BEST. WHEN YOU GET A TEAM DOWN. YOU HAVE TO STEP ON THEIR NECK WHEN YOU GOT THEM DOWN. AFTER SWITZER WE HAVE BEEN A MEDIOCRE TEAM FOR SO LONG. HAVE SHOWED FLASHES BUT COULD NEVER GET IT DONE. DEZ BRYANT WAS THE ONLY ONE I HAVE SEEN THAT HAD ANY FIRE TO HIM ABOUT THE COWBOYS. CAUSE HE KNEW THAT THEY SHOULD HAVE BEEN KILLIN TEAMS. YEAH HE HAD ALIT IF DROOS BUT HE WAS THE FIRE THE TEAM NEEDED CAUSE AFTER HIM THEIR WAS NONE THERE LIK TODAYS COWBOYS. WHOS GONNA LIGHT A FIRE WHO WANTS IT MORE THAN THE NEXT. SEEMS LIKE TO ME EVERYBODY JUST WANT THEIR CHECK. I GUARANTEE IF GIVEN THE CHANCE TO COME AND ADDRESS THE TEAM I PROMISE I COULD HELP THE DALLAS COWBOYS OUT TO SOME CAPACITY AS TO PASS AGAINST THIS TEAM. RUN AGAINST THIS TEAM. PASS AND RUN AGAINST THIS TEAM. I HAVE BEEN FOLLOWING DALLAS SINCE 1977. THEY WAY THE TEAM IS PLAYING RIGHT NOW IS SO LACKLUSTER THAT ITS EMBARRASSING SOMETIMES. WHEN WE LIST TO THE JETS. THAT WAS THE ULTIMATE LOSS. I CAN CONSULT THIS TEAM BY POSITON AND IT STARTS WITH THE DEFENSE. CAUSE WE SHOULD ALWAYS BE ON TOO OF THE QB. IF THE QB CANT GET THE BALL OUT OF HIS HANDS. THERE IS NO NEED TO WORRY BOUT THEIR RECEIVERS AT ALL. MESSAGE TO THE DBS COACH. PLEASE TEACH YOUR DBS TO GET THEIR HEADS AROUND AND OFFENSIVELY COME OUT TGE GATES AND PUT PRESSURE ON THE DEFENSE THE WHOLE GAME AND NOT JUST THE SECOND HALF. FIRST HALF SHOULD YOU SHOULD BE RUNNING PLAYS THAT SET UP PLAYS FOR THE SECOND HALF ALSO. THE DALLAS COWBOYS ARE LIADED WITH TALENT. WHY IN THE HELL THEY WAIT TIL THE GAME IS OUT OF REACH OR ON THE LINE TO UNLEASH ALL THE TALENT ACROSS THE BOARD.. JERRY FLY ME OUT TO THE TEAM FACILITIES AND JUST GIVE ME A COUPLE IF HOURS TO ADDRESS THE DALLAS COWBOYS AND I GUARANTEE YOU I CAN HELP OUR TEAM OUT IN SOME CAPACITY THAT WE GET BACK TO SMASHING TEAMS LIKE WE USED TO AND SHOULD BE DOING. WE SHOULD BE RULING THE NFC EAST EVERY DAMN YEARI LIKE OUR COACH. AT LEAST HE HAS SOME KIND OF GUMPTION AND FORTITUDE TO GO OUT AND TRY TO WIN THE GAME INSTEAD OF PLAYING TO JUST BARLEY BE IN THE GAME. GLAD THEY GOT RID OF GARRETT.!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If jerry jones can see this. Im begging you to send the jet to come get me and i promise you that i can give some insight to help our team return to dominance and dominate like we used to and not lose to the jets ever again. Like clme on man. Come on and get me!!!!!!!!!! I promise it wont be a wasted trip

  5. I agree with you Edward smalls, there isn’t any alphas out there, guys who have a fire and that have a swagger to them, that believe that you can’t guard me , you can’t block me , you can’t throw the ball my way , YOU CAN’T STOP ME and that’s why on other articles i’d like to see Kris Richard come back cuz even though he may not of been that great of a play caller, he brought a fire to the D , an Intensity , THERE’S JUST TOO MANY PLAYERS OUT THERE LOOKING FOR THE CHECK , NOT A RING and till that changes we ain’t going no where . Look at D-Law as one of quite a few players last year , he didn’t look like he was motivated or he didn’t want to play early on, the minute we started shipping ppl out , bruh he go out there and he giving it 100% now all of a sudden, cuz he knew if he didn’t get his crap straight he gonna gone just like these other guys , THERE’S TOO MANY GUYS OUT THERE WITH THEIR BELLY’S FULL, NO ONE’S HUNGRY FOR A CHIP and until that mindset changes the cowboys are just gonna be decent or ok with every so often showing glimpses of hope but falling short EVERY TIME

  6. Spot on John Edmund Moragas!!!. You can’t overcome the Jones influence. I would love to be in charge of the Cowboys too, and would love to win the Powerball, and date a super model. Like Jerry, I’m not capable. But I’m smarter than Jerry, because I know that had he left Jimmy Johnson alone, he would have more rings than fingers. BTW, the Barry bowl belongs to Jimmy Johnson as well. Had it not been for the machine that Jimmy left behind Barry would only have a ring on his collar. Jones family go away. Take your money and buy a Chinese factory and produce and import rubber dog crap for Spencer’s Gifts.

  7. I agree throwup88 to me it looked like this team quit at times last year. Which speaks to how dysfunctional the team became. Also think a big leadership vacuum opened up when Dak went down. Say what u want about him, but he is the heart and soul of this team and when he went down the air just seemed to go out of the team.

As far as Gilbert- I was pleasantly surprised with his performance against the Steelers. He showed good mobility, a live arm and impressive composure considering the level of competition. A small sample size but he definitely looked like he belonged.

  8. You’re right Gary b and that lack of leadership gets the ball sent back into Jerry’s court , I had a little hope in McCarthy and i like him better than J Garrett cuz of the fact he won’t blink twice to take someone out of the game if they crap , but he has to go , i’m out on him, what is he good at as far as being deserving of Head Coach ? He’s not good at offensive play calling , he’s not good on defensive play calling , and he’s not a leader , seems more like another Jerry Jones puppet than he is a Coach that we can win with , particularly a Super Bowl , unless we got a Aaron Rodgers in his prime.

JERRY HOW MANY TIMES YOU GONNA SAY YOU WANT A CHIP AND YET YOU HANDICAP YOURSELF OF GETTING THAT BY GETTING LESSER QUALIFIED HEAD COACHES THAN WHAT YOU COULD HAVE ? IMHO Urban Meyer would’ve been the Cowboys Head Coach if it wasn’t for Jerry of course he hasn’t proven anything in the NFL but I believe he might be the next Jimmy Johnson or he’ll be really good but that’s just me , and as we know , Jimmy couldn’t stand Jerry anymore and Jerry couldn’t stand Jimmy anymore , and thus now Jerry doesn’t want to get anyone that’s like Jimmy now and deal with that again , there’s Marvin Lewis who IMO is more qualified than McCarthy and unlike McCarthy Lewis can coach GOOD on one side of the ball and he has a presence about him that commands attention to him when he enters the room , till Jerry willing to give a coach the credit that they would rightfully deserve , and give them the power to make decisions instead of Jerry going on post game interviews and talk about players that are the “cornerstone” of the team , or that they’re like your Grandkids ? And the micro-managing everything there coach does , we ain’t getting a Super Bowl for now till some SERIOUS changes are made , THE TEAM NEEDS A RESET FROM PLAYERS, COACHES, AND FRONT OFFICE AS A WHOLE

  9. Look at the Patriots , they were doing great , EXACTLY what you’d want your franchise to be like , DO YOUR JOB , Belicheck was running the show and got his say on players and the minute Kraft steps in tells Bill NO WE’RE GOING TO STAY WITH BRADY , GET RID OF JIMMY G , things have went down hill from there and now they out the playoffs

  10. Yep the biggest handicap the cowboys have isn’t the players the coaches or the team- it’s Jerry. Leadership starts at the FO it’s the part of the equation that is missing from the cowboys, which makes it doubly hard for them to have success on the field. Jerry measures success differently. He wants the money to keep coming in and he wants people to be talking about us. The winning is secondary. Always has been.

He better thank his lucky stars for having the foresight to hire the great Jimmy Johnson. Jimmy completely orchestrated those 90s teams. Without him all we have is the 70s SBs.
