The Dallas Cowboys releasing Dez Bryant became one of the most discussed story lines in the NFL for quite some time. Bryant, despite having some rough seasons, once dominated opposing teams and was a game-changing, electrifying wide receiver.
In 2014, Bryant's best career season, he seemed to be impossible to defend. Four years ago, no one could cover #88. Now, in the middle of May 2018, no one seems to be interested in the veteran wide receiver.
Whether this is because of Dez' production in the last few years or concerns about his accountability and attitude, it's impossible to know. The facts though, are that the Draft was held more than two weeks ago, and Dez Bryant remains a free agent.
Where he will end up in 2018 remains to be seen. However, future Hall of Famer and ESPN Monday Night Football Analyst Jason Witten shared some thoughts on his former teammate's future in the NFL. Witten, who recently decided to hang up his cleats, joined The Adam Schefter Podcast to discuss his future as an analyst, his retirement and Dez' future team.
Adam Schefter asked Witten which team would be the best landing spot for Dez. Witten's response probably wasn't what many Cowboys fans wanted to hear.
“I think he's going to end up going to the Green Bay Packers. I think that's a great spot for him. Aaron Rodgers, he throws that back-shoulder throw so well. And Dez has great chemistry with a quarterback that can put the ball wherever he wants. Because I still believe Dez can high-point the football as good as any other wide receiver in the National Football League.” Jason Witten on Bryant's best potential landing spot.
When Dez Bryant was cut, his comments on wanting to stay in the division to face the Cowboys twice a year weren't well received by the fans. While seeing him play with the Eagles, Giants or Redskins would certainly hurt, watching him wear green and yellow will be painful as well.
The Packers have become a nightmare for Cowboys Nation after suffering three heart-breaking losses to the Aaron Rodgers-led offense over the last three seasons. Just the thought of watching a powerful NFC contender which apparently has a mission to destroy Dallas' hopes year after year is tough.
Witten did make it clear that he didn't have any sort of inside information on this, so his words shouldn't be taken for granted. He also mentioned Drew Brees and the Saints as a potential landing spot for Dez.
It makes a ton of sense. Witten mentioned two of the few quarterbacks who could be able to really make Bryant's career bounce back. Quarterbacks willing to throw contested footballs and the ability to put them just where #88 can catch them.
The timing of Dez' release was pretty unexpected and it undoubtedly hurt his market opportunities. Even still, the fact that he's still a free agent is impressive. Even though he isn't the same player he once was, one would think at least a team would bet on him having a comeback year.
