Training Camp continues to get closer and closer as it starts July 28th, and that will be the time we have football until February, which, for a blog site, we need!
Over the summer, it becomes hard during the downtime to find things to talk about that haven’t been touched on over 100 times this summer, not only by me, but the other writers on this site, but this is what the summer is for.
I get to do more opinion-based posts, and just give my thoughts. With that said, this is exactly what this post is about on a Monday.
I was looking through the Cowboys’ depth chart and saw some depth players that I think will need a strong Training Camp to earn the trust of the coaches and grind out some playing time.
July 28: Cowboys report to training camp in Oxnard, California
August 11: Cowboys joint practice @ Rams
August 18: Cowboys host joint practice vs. Saints
Jonathan Bullard
Jonathan Bullard signed a one-year deal with Dallas back in March.
Bullard, 32, is a 10-year veteran, having entered the NFL as a third-round pick of the Bears in 2016.
He has also played for the Cardinals, Seahawks, Falcons, Vikings and Saints.
In 2025, Bullard appeared in 15 games for New Orleans, starting six, and tallied 26 tackles, four tackles for loss and two pass breakups.
Bullard will reunite with his former defensive line coach, Marcus Dixon, who coached him with the Vikings in 2024. Bullard started all 17 games for Minnesota that season and posted 41 tackles, seven tackles for loss, three pass breakups and a sack.
With new defensive coordinator Christian Parker taking over that side of the ball for the Cowboys, Dallas is transitioning to a base 3-4 defense. Again, he is a depth guy that needs to have a good training camp so that he can be a trusted defender if someone goes down.
Starting 17 games a year ago is something I love to see, and camp will be important for him. I like him as a depth guy and a strong camp will be important for him.
Drew Shelton
Drew Shelton has been starting to pick up a lot of steam lately, and honestly I really like it.
The Cowboys offensive line is pretty well set, but they have a spot that is up in the air. The last two seasons, Tyler Guyton and Terrence Steele have struggled at the tackle position.
Drew Shelton is a super athletic tackle from Penn State that the Cowboys drafted in the 4th round, the longest they have waited to draft an offensive lineman in years.
Through mini-camp and other things, it sounds like Shelton could have a shot at stealing the starting left tackle spot, but even if he does not grab a starting spot, look for him to make an impact this summer.
A solid camp will go a long way for a guy that could be put into a starting offensive tackle spot if one of these guys struggle this season. The rookie needs a good July and August to earn trust, yet the offensive line outside of Guyton and Steele should be better this season.
Look, I could be here all day if I went over the entire depth chart, but these are two guys that I trust the most if something were to happen to the guys they are behind and needed to step in.
We will really see how good they are once training camp hits and the media coverage starts to get heavy, but as of now, these are two dudes that could benefit the most who aren’t starters or looking at a horrible situation like the cornerback room.
Let’s see how it shakes out after the next few months roll by.
