I am counting down the days until training camp starts because, checking my posts over the last month, I have covered just about anything there is to cover without drama this offseason.
With that in mind, that is a great thing. I enjoy being able to just do my own little posts and diving into things that I normal wouldn’t have the time to do because we would be worrying about all the drama that is going on with this football team during the offseason.
Now, with that said, as I was looking over the death chart once again, I figured I would do a post about some players who are probably a long shot to make the final 53, but if they do could bring some juice to the team in a very small role.
Take a look below and let me know what you think. Remember this is just a filler post and these guys might not even make the roster. I understand that!
Ameer Speed
I am starting with Ameer Speed because, well, let’s be honest, the Dallas Cowboys cornerback room is the worst unit on the team.
If you didn’t know, Speed played for the Houston Gamblers of the UFL. Speed joined the Gamblers during week six of the 2026 season and made an immediate impact.
In five games played, he contributed 20 tackles (14 solo), leading the team in tackles for three of the five games played. He also added 2 passes defensed.
Before that, he was a key contributor to their 2021 CFP National Championship team, before concluding his collegiate career as a starter for the Michigan State Spartans. Selected by the New England Patriots in the sixth round of the 2023 NFL Draft.
He has only played in 17 total games since being drafted for a handful of teams, but he has not found his footing with a team yet, and this could be his last chance.
His straight line speed is the best thing that is going for him.
If he makes the roster, he would be used to cover larger receivers or the occasional tight end.
He struggles with ball tracking and locating the football when his back is turned to the quarterback. He could help out in rare cases, but with how weak the current state of the Cowboys cornerback room is, I wouldn’t be shocked if he somehow made the final 53.
Justin Barron
One guy that will be an interesting watch for the rest of the summer is Justin Barron. He came to the Cowboys after the 2025 draft following a long career at Syracuse.
He started his career as a wide receiver, moved to defensive back, and eventually finished his college career at linebacker.
Right now it might be tough for him to make the roster as a linebacker; DeMarvion Overshown, Dee Winters, Jaishawn Barham, and Shemar James. Those are the locks that I think will make the final 53, but after that, how many inside guys do they plan to keep?
His length is the best thing about him, he could be used in a nice package and use his coverage skills if needed, provide a pop and some juice off the bench if needed to step in if he makes the final 53.
Either way, I could probably add two or three other players to this list, but in the end, we have no idea who will or who won’t make the roster and these two guys are ones that have probably less than a 50% chance, but will be good to keep your eyes on when training camp starts in about two weeks.
We will see how these guys work out, but we will get a better idea once the media is allowed access inside the building at camp.
