The 2020 NFL season is right around the corner and roster moves are in full swing for the Dallas Cowboys. There’s quite a bit of talent at wide receiver on the roster. Amari Cooper, Michael Gallup, and CeeDee Lamb just may form the league’s best receiving trio this season. Also, Noah Brown and Cedrick Wilson have made great strides in training camp.
There’s one receiver, however, who seemingly didn’t make enough plays to stick around. According to Michael Gehlken of the Dallas Morning News, the Cowboys are releasing Devin Smith.
Smith is a former second-round pick of the New York Jets in 2015. Unfortunately, though, Smith’s time with the Jets never got a chance to blossom thanks to multiple ACL tears. He only caught 10 passes for 135 yards and a touchdown in three seasons with the Jets before being waived in July of 2018.
The Cowboys would sign him in January of 2019 and he played well enough in the preseason to earn a backup role. In Week 2 against the Washington Football Team last season, he caught three passes for 73 yards including a 51-yard touchdown. However, he would only play in two more games for the entire season catching just two passes for 39 yards.
Smith will likely see quite a bit of interest on the open market as the season approaches.
