Jason Witten Accepts High School Coaching Job in Texas

Many expected Jason Witten, who just last week announced he re-retirement, to remain in football and move into the coaching ranks with his next job. But the Hall-of-Famer didn’t do it in the NFL, and instead has accept the head coaching position with Liberty Christian School in Argyle, Texas.

Witten has been connected with Liberty Christian for many years through his children’s attendance there. Though a native of Washington D.C. and later Tennessee for his high school and college years, Jason and his family have lived in Texas since he joined the Dallas Cowboys in 2003.

Witten has been one of the most respected players in the NFL during his 17-year career. For both his locker room leadership and technical proficiency at the tight end position, Jason has long been tagged as a future coach once his playing days were over.

After retiring once before following the 2017 season, Witten spent a year in the Monday Night Football booth but to negative reviews. He returned to the NFL for a final season with the Cowboys in 2019 and then one year with the Las Vegas Raiders in 2020.

Last week Jason announced he was hanging up the cleats again and this time, one would assume, for good.

There’s always been a thought that Witten would find coaching work with the Dallas Cowboys or perhaps join Jason Garrett somewhere when he was ready to start the next chapter. But it appears Witten is also thinking about his with this next chapter.

Who knows where this first foray into coaching could eventually lead? For now, we join in congratulating Jason Witten on his new job and wish him all the best for the future.
