Drew Pearson has waited far too long to join his peers in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Thankfully, one of them is still around to be part of the festivities. Quite fittingly, Roger Staubach has been announced as Pearson’s presenter for the 2021 Enshrinement Ceremony.
Pearson and Staubach played together as Dallas Cowboys from 1973, Drew’s rookie year, until Roger retired after the 1979.season. Pearson enjoyed his greatest success with Staubach as his quarterback with three Pro Bowls, three First-Team All Pros, and of course their Super Bowl victory in 1977.
Pearson’s playing career ended following a car accident during the 1984 offseason. He was the Cowboys all-time leader in receptions and receiving yards at that time, but has since been passed on those lists by more recent players like Michael Irvin, Jason Witten, and Dez Bryant.
For his era, though, Pearson was about as prolific a receiver as you could have. He was named to the NFL All-Decade Team for the 1970s and, up until now, has been the only player from that group not inducted to the Hall of Fame..
Thankfully, Canton is finally getting it right.
Having Roger Staubach present Drew Pearson that day will only make it a sweeter experience for the Cowboys fans who’ve waited for Pearson to get his day. It will be a big weekend for them as Dallas and the Pittsburgh Steelers will clash in the first preseason game of 2021.
Additionally, the induction of former coach Jimmy Johnson will finally occur around this same time. Part of the Class of 2020, Jimmy’s ceremony was postponed during the COVID-19 pandemic. Troy Aikman is scheduled to present Johnson for his induction.
It will be quite a time for Cowboys Nation; the two greatest eras of Dallas football honored in both ceremonies!
