The Dallas Cowboys’ weekend was a crazy one. In a span of three days, they hosted the NFL Draft in the AT&T Stadium, drafted 10 football players, traded for Tavon Austin and traded Ryan Switzer away, not to mention reports about Jason Witten planning to retire emerged.
A wild draft weekend, indeed. But it could’ve been even wilder had Jon Schneider and the Seattle Seahawks given the Dallas Cowboys a response to their offer.
According to Shan Shariff from 105.3 The Fan, Jerry Jones & Co. offered the Seahawks their third rounder, the 81st overall selection of the year for veteran Safety Earl Thomas.
The three-times All-Pro safety was on many Cowboys’ fans offseason wish list ever since he told Head Coach Jason Garret “come get me” last December after Dallas lost all playoffs hopes in a devastating loss to the Seahawks. However, Seattle’s front office did not respond, and so the Cowboys went on to draft WR Michael Gallup, out of Colorado State.
Giving up the 50th overall pick would’ve been a questionable call for the Cowboys. Sure they’re getting one of the best at the safety position in the entire NFL, but at the end of the day, Thomas is 29 years old and will be asking for a juicy contract extension soon.
I think Cowboys Nation would’ve been insanely happy with the Joneses getting Earl Thomas for only a third round pick, though.
Having said that, the front office got a steal with pick 81 by drafting Gallup. A smooth route runner in college, he’s a very good addition for a team trying to build a Dak-friendly offense and I’ll be surprised if he isn’t a week 1 starter for the team.
Safety will remain a need for the Cowboys, but they seem to be betting on the guys they have right now. Xavier Woods, a sixth-round pick in 2017, showed some pretty impressive flashes last season and could develop into a full-time starter next season.
Woods was a steal in the eyes of many last year and under new DB Coach Kris Richard it’s difficult not to be excited about his future in Dallas. Also, don’t forget about Kavon Frazier, who could have a breakout season as well.
The Dallas Cowboys couldn’t get Earl Thomas, but they got away with a nice haul in the 2018 NFL Draft which should have Cowboys Nation very happy. We’ll see if what they have at safety proves to be enough once the season starts.
