The 2024 Dallas Cowboys are not a good football team, we all understand that by now. From the injuries and poor performances leading to a 3-7 start, to Jerry Jones threatening to fire radio hosts, there is just a lot of bad to go around this season.
I know it is nearly impossible to find anything of value during a losing season, especially after watching this team win 12 games each of the last three seasons.
They fell short in the playoffs each time, but it was still fun in the regular seasons watching them compete for division titles and the playoffs.
This season has been very different.
I have done my fair share of complaining on Twitter about how badly this team has been built this season and Jerry Jones setting the Cowboys up to fail since before the season even started.
I wanted to see if anyone had started thinking like I have lately, as far as what positives can be taken away from such an abysmal season this football team — and its fans — is having.
The Cowboys are Climbing the Draft Board
I’m sure this is at the top of the list for everyone who follows this team. For the first time since the first Dak Prescott injury in 2020, the Dallas Cowboys are going to have a very solid draft pick.
The Cowboys finished the 2020 season with a 6-10 record, and it would have been a heck of a lot worse if they did not win three out of their last four games.
They had a 3-9 record after week 13, very similar to the way this season is going for them.
I don’t see this football team winning three more games. The only possible wins they have left are against the Giants on Thanksgiving and the Panthers in week 15. The rest are going to be losses.
There is still a lot of football left to be played, which means we don’t yet know exactly where this team is going to land in the final order, but there is some hope in the prospect of a top-5 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft.
They have enough players under contract that they can make 2025 work, and adding a top guy will help.
A New Head Coach Could be on the Horizon
If this team had any other General Manager than Jerry Jones, I would probably be a little happier about this than I am.
Jerry controls this football team, and he has to have a head coach who knows his place in the Dallas Cowboys organization. Heck, Mike McCarthy can’t even give a report of some of the players that are injured because Jones makes the call about them playing, or not.
It will be good to see a fresh face leading the team, but who wants to take this job with Jones & Co. breathing down their neck?
I will say, the lack of positives this season, perhaps for the first time, is getting to Jerry Jones.
You can see it week after week, and maybe this will allow him to move out of the way a bit to let these guys do what they have to do.
I would love a guy like Ben Johnson, the offensive coordinator for the Lions, but I can’t see him taking this job as his first head coaching job. And no, Deion Sanders is not going to be the next head coach of the Dallas Cowboys.
That is all the media wants to talk about: how Jerry should hire Sanders and draft his son.
Like, do you all understand that Dak Prescott just signed a HUGE contract? They aren’t drafting a quarterback with their first round pick. Not next year and not the year after either.
Key Players
Yes, this season is going badly, but let’s not act like they don’t still have guys like CeeDee Lamb, Micah Parsons, Trevon Diggs, DeMarvion Overshown and others who are going to be here in 2025.
This is not your typical top-5 draft pick team that has an awful roster.
They will not be adding a guy they think will change the entire team. They are going to add a guy to be another playmaker for this team, because that is what they need.
Dak Prescott, whether you like him or not, gives this team the best chance to win. You all wanted Cooper Rush, and at some point, you’ll get Trey Lance, and you see how well that is going for us.
Hopefully, Jerry Jones will make something work this offseason, signing a player or two, because I think he knows full well how bad they are this year.
Add a top player in the draft, a new head coach that is not Deion, and add a veteran to help them in free agency.
As bad as this season is, these are some of the things we can take away from the misery that is the 2024 Dallas Cowboys football season.
