Brendan Sorsby to the Cowboys through the 2027 Supplemental Draft?

I’m not saying the Cowboys need to go hunting for a controversy the size of Brendan Sorsby.

The only controversy would be the gambling issue because he would not be coming in to take Dak Prescott’s job. We can squash that potential storyline.

Dak Prescott is the guy.

What I am saying is the Cowboys should always be in the market for quarterback value, and the NFL Supplemental Draft could give them a rare chance to take a swing on a high-end developmental quarterback.

Brendan Sorsby’s situation is not normal. He transferred to Texas Tech after a strong season at Cincinnati, but now his college eligibility is in question. If he cannot play college football in 2026 and the NFL approves the petition, the Supplemental Draft could be his path.

And if that happens, I think Dallas needs to be ready.

Why the Cowboys Supplemental Draft Angle Makes Sense

The Supplemental Draft is not a free lottery ticket. Teams submit blind bids by round and, let’s say the Cowboys used a 2027 third-round pick on Sorsby and won, they would lose that third-round pick in the 2027 NFL Draft.

That could be the price.

Here is where it gets interesting. The Cowboys could have extra 2027 draft flexibility once compensatory picks are handed out. The picks are nowhere near being handed out, but the Cowboys will have 24 unrestricted free agents next offseason.

If the front office believes extra picks are coming, a future third-rounder becomes easier to stomach. Especially at quarterback.

I know some folks will say, “Why water a third-round pick on a backup?” That’s looking too small. This would not be about finding a backup, but developing a real quarterback asset.

Dak can’t play forever. It’s always nice to have a quarterback in waiting.

Brendan Sorsby Has Tools

Sorsby is not some random name being tossed into the Cowboys rumor mill.

In 2025 at Cincinnati, he threw for 2,800 yards, 27 touchdowns, and five interceptions. He also added major value with his legs, rushing for 580 yards and nine touchdowns.

That’s 36 total touchdowns.

That will play.

He has size at 6’3” and 235 pounds, mobility, production, and starting experience. That is exactly the kind of quarterback I want in Dallas to study behind Dak Prescott. He’s not perfect, but the potential is there.

The Cowboys don’t have to draft a finished product. They need someone with enough upside to develop without being thrown into the fire to early.

I think that’s what makes this a fun idea.

If Sorsby had another full season of college football, he could become a much bigger name in the 2027 NFL Draft. If the Supplemental Draft opens the door early, Dallas could get ahead of the market.

The Cowboys Still Need to be Careful

I’m not saying Dallas should ignore the red flags and sprint to the podium or phone in this instance.

Brendan Sorsby’s situation is serious, and any team interested would need to do serious homework. His medicals, legal situation, NCAA eligibility details, character checks, support system. Everything.

You don’t spend a future third-round pick without knowing what you’re getting into.

The Cowboys also need to ask a hard football question: would Sorsby be better than the quarterback options they could get in the third round next year?

If the answer is no, then keep it moving, but if the answer is yes, then Dallas should not be scared of the unusual path.

We Aren’t Replacing Dak Prescott

The Cowboys Supplemental Draft idea is not about replacing Dak Prescott, even though that is exactly what some fans want. It’s about finding value where other teams may hesitate.

That is why Brendan Sorsby situation is worth watching.

If he returns to Texas Tech, then this whole thing goes away, but if he becomes available in the NFL Supplemental Draft, the Cowboys should have their homework done and their number ready.

For me, a 2027 third-round pick would be aggressive, but with the extra compensatory picks possibly coming and a high-end developmental quarterback sitting there, it might be the right kind of aggressive move.

Sometimes you have to be willing to take a swing before everybody else realizes there is a ball to hit.

And this could be one of those swings.
