Cowboys front office says Dallas has what in Brian Schottenheimer?

Yesterday afternoon, the Dallas Cowboys introduced Brain Schottenheimer as the 10th head coach in franchise history. As you are all probably aware, it was a very interesting presser to say the least.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones did what he always does, and that was trying to take the attention away from all the failures the team has had over the last 30 years.

I watched the entire press conference that lasted just a bit over an hour, and while the Jones family said they understood how they handled the coaching search, he said something that had every Dallas fan on Twitter laughing.

Stephen Jones says the league is going with rookie head coaches who are offensive wizards, he thinks the Cowboys have a better version.

Yes, you read that correctly, and look, I hope with everything in me, Brain does a great job as the head coach, but I don’t even think Stephen believes that.

Other Key Takeaways

During the presser, we learned that Schottenheimer will not only be the head coach, but he will be calling the plays. Just like McCarthy did last season.

It makes me wonder though, why did they not just ask him to come in the same role he has held, but just call the plays this time?

In terms of Schottenheimer’s approach to the news conference, he kept it basic.

He laid out his broad plans for the Cowboys’ offense, gave appreciation to quarterback Dak Prescott, who was in attendance with a handful of his teammates, and made sure to mention his late father Marty, who was a longtime head coach in the NFL.

The current staff is not good.

They lost John “Bones” Fassel and Al Harris, former special teams coordinator and assistant head coach/defensive backs coach. Harris took a job with the Chicago Bears, while Bones got hired by Tennessee.

Both have had succuss since being in Dallas. I am more bummed about losing Harris, as I thought he could have been in play for the defensive coordinator position, which now sounds like it is going to be given to former Bears head coach Matt Eberflus.

A couple of the good things I heard from him is that Shotty said he would like to get back to shifts and motion which is something Mike McCarthy always got away from.

He also noted four or five times that he led the league in rushing when he was calling the plays for Seattle and the Rams.

Now, Dallas better get a running back, because without one, it is going to be hard looking around at all the backs in this league.

Take a listen to the twitter post above. It is a short of him talking about this exact thing.

Roster Needs Work

Let’s be honest here, the roster needs massive work. They can mess with Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb deals to make cap room, and when they sign Micah Parsons it will also help with that, but they have to make something work.

I am not sure how Jerry can watch this same thing again in 2025, he knows it is not going to work.

As of January Parsons, Williams and Kneeland as starters with a rotation of Tyrus Wheat (assuming the Cowboys retain him as an exclusive rights free agent) and Luiji Villain (signed to a futures deal); and Williams will take time to reach top form after having his ACL reconstructed.

This Cowboys defensive line is not going to be good. They were already bad enough at stopping the run. How do you think things are going to be now?
