As we continue to move closer to the NFL Draft in April, I was doing some deep diving to see how this front office has actually been doing over the recent years, and found something very concerning.
When it comes to the draft, this team has does really well, but if you take a look at the Dallas Cowboys second round picks since 2019, it has been ugly. Like really ugly.
The 2nd round has been a disaster for the Cowboys because they zeroed in on needs or traits.
Take A Look
Let’s take a trip down memory lane shall we? The Cowboys have really only hit on one second round pick and that was in 2020.
They drafted Trevon Diggs that year in the 2nd, but outside of him the rest have been a head scratcher.
From 2019 to 2024 here is who they have drafted in the second round: Tyrsten Hill, Trevon Diggs. Kelvin Joseph, Sam Williams, Luke Schoomaker and Marshawn Kneeland.
Schoonmaker and Kneeland could prove us wrong still, but the Dallas Cowboys need to make a better pick this April and actually get a player who will turn into a good NFL player!
Williams has ever chance to be a great player, but after that ACL injury during the summer last year, who knows if he will recover from that. We see what Michael Gallup did, and how Terence Steele has been.
The 2nd round has been a disaster for the #Cowboys because they zeroed in on needs or traits.

It is always hit or miss.
Hill, Joseph were clearly misses, and Diggs is now in the part of his career where he is battling nothing but injuries, so the Dallas Cowboys need to hit on this years second round pick.
Draft Board
I, of course, am not an NFL scout or anything, but based on the amount of football I watch, both pro and at the college level, this Dallas Cowboys team has major needs, and plenty of guys that go in the 2nd round can step right in a be day one starters.
Here are a few in the second round that I think Dallas could bring in right from the jump and get better production out of them then what they have in the past in the 2nd round.
I fully expect the Cowboys to draft either a offensive lineman, wide out or defensive lineman in the first round filling one of the three biggest needs. That will then allow them to draft maybe a running back in the second.
One of the true breakout stars of the 2024 college season is Cam Skattebo possesses a level of power and toughness that Dallas’ backfield currently lacks. Last season, he was a nightmare to tackle, breaking 104 tackles and gaining 1,214 of his 1,716 rushing yards after initial contact.
Dallas received a third round pick last year moving down from 24 to 29.

The second round might be a bit of reach, but hey this seems like a guy Jerry Jones would take, even though I would rather have TreVeyon Henderson from Ohio State.
Now if they don’t go defensive line in the first, a player the Cowboys can use is still on the board with the 41st pick, and he will boost the defense’s interior.
Deon Walker is a massive human being, standing at 6’6″and 345 pounds. During the year, he had 11 tackles, 1.5 sacks, and 32 total tackles, which may not seem like great numbers, but Deon Walker’s job was to take up blockers and stop the run.
Deone Walker is a standout defensive lineman prospect known for his size, power, and agility. He effectively disrupts both the run and pass games, showcasing high energy and versatility.
Still early analysis, but this WR class feels like it falls off a cliff after Day 2. With so many other needs, might not be one you don't want to carry into the draft.

His tackling, quick footwork, and leadership strengths make him a valuable asset for any NFL defense.
There a number of players this team could take, but the point of this post is that they have not been good in the 2nd round over the last six years and that needs to change if they want any chance to compete this season.
The Cowboys mgmt, if you can call it that, will find a way to draft yet another uncessful Since Jimmy left, they used a #1 on a TE that couldn’t separate and 4-#2s that have been busts. I love discussing football, but it is getting harder to care about the Cowboys. We can’t cover all of our needs. I looks clear that Mazi is a bust and the Cowboys should just cut him to send a message to the rest of the team. Sign Odig and the make a #1 or #2 on a DT. We need a mlb so if the kid in Alabama is good, draft. I think we can trade down, pick up a #1 and #2 or #3. I would trade 2 of 5s for a #4 to take a RB. The first 4 picks should be on DT (#1 or #2 if Odig leaves), CB (if Jordan leaves), LOT to move to RT and cut Steele, a MLB, WR or RB. Some money in FA. I also love the Ohio State QB, Will Howard. We can’t hit on all these positions by picks. Stop draft and signing injured players it was devastating this year.
meant to say unsuccessful TE. We are stuck with Dak for 4 years who can not lift a team like so many other QBs in the league. He looks like a dear in the headlights during playoffs and yet we are stuck with him for 4 years. If we cut Micah for a #1 and #2 I will quit the Cowboys, that is probably what Jerry would accept. The only good trade since Laundry left were Jimmy’s

I agree that the second round picks have mostly been a disaster, so what if the Cowboys were to trade a second rounder for another pick (or two).
Heck, with the luck they’ve been having in the second round, what do they have to lose?
Of course I’m just an Armchair Quarterback, so I’m just offering my opinions and thoughts.
