Cowboys new 'Texas Coast' offense is the talk around The Star

As the mandatory minicamp kicked off this week for the Dallas Cowboys, a new term regarding the type of offense the team will run in 2023 has been the talk around The Star this week.

The ‘Texas Coast’ offense.

A combination of the west coast offense and Dallas’ previous offense.

“It’s got definitely some West Coast principles,” Dak Prescott said. “But has a little bit of what we’ve done in the past and just marrying them together with a lot of detail and maybe in a sense, a system that’s not out there.”

New offensive coordinator Brain Schottenheimer who will get to focus more on schemes and other essential details with Mike McCarthy calling the plays this year, seems upbeat about it.

“I’ve said it and I do believe it, it wasn’t broke. What they’ve done here over the last 5-6-7 years has been really good since Dak came into the league,” he said.

Adding “flavor” is what Schottenheimer said, but he noted that a lot of the same attack on offense we’ve seen in the last couple of years will remain in place.

adding Flavor

I like that work from Schottenheimer.

With McCarthy calling plays, Schottenheimer can stay behind the scenes.

After looking into the new system it seems likely be a more up-tempo, no-huddle type. Something McCarthy ran when he was with Aaron Rodgers in Green Bay.

My initial thoughts are that they want to try and run as many plays as possible, every week.

Don’t allow defenses to get set into what they want; keep them on their toes. We saw some of that in 2022, but the team averaged 65.5 offensive plays last year—ranking 9th in the league.

The main goal of the offense is to become more efficient, score more points, like in 2021 when they led the league in points per game, and have fewer turnovers.

Yes, we all understand that Dak Prescott did not take care of the football last season, he won’t do it again this year.

Some were completely on Prescott, let’s also not act like some guys weren’t flat out dropping balls left and right.

Prescott will be better.

This team now gets Michael Gallup back with a full offseason, and you add Brandin Cooks. This trio is the best Prescott has ever had around him.

HUGE difference from Noah Brown, Dennis Houston, etc.

“This is our first year of playing the way we want to play, Mike McCarthy said this week.

I would be lying if I said I wasn’t excited about this offense. Cooks is a No. 1 receiver, and he will get matched up with No. 2 corners all year because of Lamb.

Tony Pollard says he will be ready for training camp; he should thrive in this new flavor of the offense also.

Although Dallas still needs to add a blocking-type running back, Deuce Vaughn could be another player to EXCELL in this offense.

He is electric. An up-tempo, fast-paced offense would be perfect for him.

I will be the first to tell you that if this team fails this season, it’s over. Both sides of the ball are loaded.

It would be another gigantic disappointment if they come up short.

I agree Jimmy, but with the offseason that is all we can do right now, unfortunately.

Jimmy Alexander Sr. There are no games in June. All you have is talk. SMH.

Ok great, but talk is cheap, let’s see results (and not 2 first round and out post season wins in seven years).
Unfortunately, it appears the FO may stupidly extend their overrated, overpaid, uncontested QB1, so all this “new offense” talk may be just that, TALK!
27 years and counting. And if they extend this guy, get ready Cowboys fans for 30+ years.

Hi Vam,

27-years and counting falls on the lab of you know who. Jerry finally had an offseason in which it looks like he wants to win.

The team has never traded for two of the biggest weaknesses in the same month, let alone same season.

Adding a walking 1000-yard receiver and a former DPOY that gets to take the weak side.

JERRY finally did something.

Good lord, the talk-is-cheap guys are annoying. Obviously no one wins a single game with talk, but there’s nothing wrong with the guys feeling good about where they are right now. The games will be played eventually, you know.

Amen Matt,

This is exactly what I am saying. I fully expressed that if this team fails this season, my hope, their window are done. I just haven’t seen a offseason like this one from Jerry adding what he has added to fill the voids.

It’s good being a Cowboys Fan!!! Back-to-Back 12 – 5 seasons, yet, all the whining, complaining on how this team chokes. There’s a wannabe team to the south of Dallas in Houston, ask their fans if they’d be willing to trade places. Root for the browns, cardinals, lions, take your pick. As for me and my house we will be DC4L !!!!!

When they were talking play defense, run the ball, keep it out of Dak’s hands, I was optimistic but after reading this article I’m depressed. We’re look at last year’s offense in hurry up mode.

All I know is I can’t wait to see what Hunter Loupke brings to the game. I’ll be watching in preseason. Moose Johnson replica, but a receiver as well!

Shane, I believe this team will be better on offense because of a serious UPGRADE at Wide Receiver and the fact that Kellen Moore is now in San Diego. I will always believe he was the anchor around this team’s neck on offense. Dak Prescott was constantly in 3rd and long situations because of Moore’s insistence of running Elliott up the middle for no gain or maybe a yard. Next an end and around play fior no gain, and 3rd and long for Prescott. A different philosophy was desperately needed and hopefully they got that with McCarthy and Shottenheimer running the offense.
